On October 16, Air Canada announced new Canada–U.S. flights for summer 2027 under the two airlines' Transborder Joint Business Agreement. Air Canada will add three routes, and United will add three more, according to [Air Canada's release](https://www.aircanada.com/media/air-canada-expands-canada-us-connectivity-with-new-summer-2027-routes-increasing-options-for-travellers-under-its-transborder-joint-business-agreement-with-united-airlines/).\n\nThe same day, the airlines asked Ottawa to approve a renewed and expanded version of that deal. That part is not done yet.\n\n## Air Canada's three new routes\n\nAir Canada published a full schedule for its new flights:","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"},{"role":"htmltable","html":"<table><tr><th>Route</th><th>Season</th><th>Frequency</th></tr><tr><td>Toronto to Louisville</td><td>April 28 to Oct. 31, 2027</td><td>Up to daily</td></tr><tr><td>Montréal to Indianapolis</td><td>June 1 to Sept. 30, 2027</td><td>Daily</td></tr><tr><td>Edmonton to Newark</td><td>June 1 to Oct. 17, 2027</td><td>Four times weekly</td></tr></table>","layout":"text"},{"role":"body","format":"markdown","text":"Toronto–Louisville starts in late April and goes daily in May, Air Canada says. The Edmonton flight leaves at 6:00 a.m. and lands at [Newark](https://www.loungefrog.com/airports/ewr) at 12:23 p.m., giving Albertans a direct link to a United hub. Air Canada has not named the aircraft for the three new routes. It did say it will put the larger Airbus A220 on its existing Edmonton–San Francisco flights.\n\n## United's three new routes\n\nUnited's side has fewer details so far. The release says United will:\n\n* Launch seasonal flights from Newark to St. John's, Newfoundland.\n* Add new flights from [Denver](https://www.loungefrog.com/airports/den) to [Ottawa](https://www.loungefrog.com/airports/yow) and to [Québec City](https://www.loungefrog.com/airports/yqb).\n* Add more flights between Washington, D.C., and Québec City.\n* Grow daily seats between Denver and Winnipeg by 65%.\n\nUnited has not published dates or times for its new routes in the release. St. John's airport CEO Dennis Hogan said the Newark flight will reconnect the two cities \"for the first time in more than a decade.\"\n\n## The bigger fight: the joint venture\n\nThe routes are the headline. The deal behind them is the real story. Air Canada and United have run this joint business arrangement since 2022. It lets them coordinate schedules, prices, sales and revenue management on certain Canada–U.S. routes, [Transport Canada says](https://www.canada.ca/en/transport-canada/news/2026/10/transport-canada-evaluating-a-proposed-update-of-the-joint-venture-between-air-canada-and-united-airlines.html).\n\nNow the airlines want to renew and expand it. Transport Canada is running a public interest review that will look at competition and the economic effects for Canadians. The public can comment until November 15.\n\nAir Canada argues the deal has worked. It says 20 new transborder routes have been created since 2022, including six added in 2026. It also says more than 4.3 million passengers have flown jointly on the two airlines, and that customers get more than 1,200 connecting itineraries.\n\n## What it means at the lounge\n\nFor Air Canada flyers heading south, the lounge to know in Toronto is the [Maple Leaf Lounge Transborder](https://www.loungefrog.com/lounges/yyz-air-canada-maple-leaf-lounge-transborder). In Edmonton, Lounge Frog lists the [Maple Leaf Lounge](https://www.loungefrog.com/lounges/yeg-air-canada-maple-leaf-lounge) and a [Plaza Premium Lounge for U.S. departures](https://www.loungefrog.com/lounges/yeg-plaza-premium-lounge-us-departures). Check which one serves your gate before you go.\n\nAt the U.S. end, Newark has several [United Clubs](https://www.loungefrog.com/programs/united-club), including the [Terminal C mezzanine club](https://www.loungefrog.com/lounges/ewr-united-club-c-mezzanine). Lounge Frog lists no lounges at Louisville and only a [Delta Sky Club](https://www.loungefrog.com/lounges/ind-delta-sky-club) at Indianapolis, so Star Alliance flyers should not expect a partner lounge for the trip home from those cities.\n\nAir Canada and United are both Star Alliance members. Eligible elites and premium flyers can often use each other's lounges, but the rules depend on your ticket and status. Check the [Maple Leaf Lounge rules](https://www.loungefrog.com/programs/air-canada-maple-leaf-lounge) before you count on a visit.\n\n## Our take\n\nLouisville and Indianapolis are not glamorous routes. That is the point. They link mid-size U.S. cities to Air Canada's hubs. Air Canada says the new flights will help customers \"reach a broader range of global markets.\"\n\nThe bigger question sits in Ottawa. The airlines say a stronger joint venture means more routes and smoother connections. Transport Canada says its review will weigh the effects on competition. Anyone can weigh in until November 15.","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"}]}
