Etihad Guest members will earn miles on eligible Southwest flights and redeem them across Southwest's network in the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Rapid Rewards members will earn points on eligible Etihad flights and redeem them across Etihad's global network, which the release says includes new destinations such as Krabi, Zanzibar and Hanoi.\n\nMark Potter, managing director of Etihad Guest, and Nandika Suri, Southwest's vice president of Rapid Rewards, both framed the deal around giving members more choice and more places to go. Further details are promised on etihad.com closer to launch.\n\n## Why this is the second half of a story\n\nSouthwest named Etihad as a partner a day earlier, alongside Icelandair and China Airlines, in the [October 15 release](https://investors.southwest.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/1946/more-to-love-from-rapid-rewards-southwest-airlines-expands-rewards-redemption-and-member-benefits) that reset Rapid Rewards for 2027. We covered the Southwest side in [our look at the new partner bookings](https://www.loungefrog.com/news/southwest-international-points-partners-2027-booking-questions) and in [the breakdown of the new Silver, Gold and Platinum tiers](https://www.loungefrog.com/news/southwest-rapid-rewards-2027-silver-gold-platinum-icon-lounge).\n\nWhat is new here is the Abu Dhabi view. For Etihad Guest members, Southwest is the first way to earn and burn miles on a US domestic network, and a large one: Southwest flies to more US cities than any other airline. Until now an Etihad Guest member landing in Chicago or Washington had no partner to carry them onward on the same program.\n\n## Where the networks meet\n\nEtihad lists direct flights to Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, New York, Washington and Toronto, with Calgary starting October 25. Southwest serves every one of the US cities on that list, though not always from the same terminal or airport. In Chicago, Etihad lands at O'Hare while Southwest's hub is Midway. In Washington, Etihad uses Dulles while Southwest's base is Reagan National, with a smaller operation at Dulles and BWI. In New York, Etihad flies to JFK and Southwest to LaGuardia. The partnership connects the programs, not necessarily the itineraries, and until booking rules appear, assume a connection is two tickets.\n\nOne Etihad advantage carries over whatever the airport. Its Abu Dhabi hub has a US Customs and Border Protection preclearance facility, so passengers clear US immigration and customs before they board and arrive as domestic travelers, which is exactly what a Southwest onward flight needs.\n\n## What has not been announced\n\nThree things decide whether this is useful, and none is public yet.\n\nThe earning rates. Partner earning is usually a fraction of what you get on the airline's own metal, and Southwest sells fares in tiers that may earn differently. Etihad has said only that eligible flights will earn.\n\nStatus reciprocity. The release says nothing about Etihad Guest Silver, Gold or Platinum tiers earning tier miles on Southwest, or about Southwest's new 2027 elite levels earning on Etihad. Southwest's own release did not promise it either.\n\nLounges. Etihad Guest Gold and Platinum members can use Etihad lounges and, on Etihad flights, partner lounges. There is no suggestion that this extends to anything on a Southwest ticket, and Southwest's own lounges are not due until late 2027. For an Etihad flyer connecting in Boston or Charlotte, the lounge options remain the ones already at the airport, which you can check on our [Boston](https://www.loungefrog.com/airports/bos) and [Charlotte](https://www.loungefrog.com/airports/clt) pages.\n\n## What to do now\n\nNothing, which is the honest answer. If you hold Etihad Guest miles and fly Southwest often, the partnership gives you a second place to spend a balance that has few US uses today. If you are a Rapid Rewards member, Etihad adds a long-haul business class option your points could not touch before. Neither is bookable until spring, and the value depends entirely on the award chart, which does not exist yet. Watch for the rates, then decide.\n\n## Photo credit\n\nSixflashphoto / Wikimedia Commons.
