Starting November 30, 2026, Finnair will offer up to three departures a day from Umeå Airport, according to [an October 16 announcement from Swedavia](https://news.cision.com/se/swedavia-ab/r/finnair-utokar-trafiken-fran-umea-airport-med-fler-forbindelser-till-vasa-och-helsingfors,c4409922), the state-owned company that runs Umeå and nine other Swedish airports.\n\nThe added flying comes in two parts. Finnair will run Umeå to Helsinki by way of Vaasa, on Finland's west coast, 13 times a week. That pattern includes a new morning departure. On top of that, the airline will fly Umeå to Helsinki nonstop up to five times a week.\n\n[Helsinki Airport, Finnair's hub, where Umeå passengers connect](https://pub-fac99da959e344fe99d810d309cef7df.r2.dev/photos/article/3743084e-0fc5-4815-b1ea-1678c63e14ba/854b38c481f9798e88a000a5591094e4.jpg)\n[Finnair photo released by Swedavia with its announcement of more Umeå flights](https://pub-fac99da959e344fe99d810d309cef7df.r2.dev/photos/article/3743084e-0fc5-4815-b1ea-1678c63e14ba/71b5833dfea09016be3c3c83343628f0.jpg)\n\n## What changes on November 30\n\nFor people who live in or visit the Umeå region, the main gain is choice. A morning flight makes a same-day connection in Helsinki much easier, whether the trip ends in another Nordic city or continues to Asia or North America. The nonstop flights skip the Vaasa stop, which should shorten the trip on the days they operate.\n\nThe Vaasa routing also does double duty. It links Umeå and Vaasa directly, two cities that face each other across the narrow Kvarken strait in the Gulf of Bothnia. For business travelers moving between the two coasts, that is a short hop rather than a long drive and ferry.\n\nNeither Swedavia nor Finnair gave the aircraft type, the exact flight times, or which days the nonstop flights run. Swedavia's release also does not spell out how many flights Finnair runs from Umeå today, so we can't say exactly how much capacity is being added. Travelers should check Finnair's schedule before booking around the new morning departure.\n\nBoth companies framed the move as a boost for access to the region. \"More departures to Helsinki make it easier for residents, businesses and visitors to travel to and from the region,\" said Sofia Johansson, who manages Umeå Airport for Swedavia (translated from Swedish).\n\n## Connecting through Helsinki\n\nFinnair says Helsinki links travelers to more than 100 destinations across its network. Most Umeå passengers on these flights will be connecting, so the transfer matters as much as the first leg.\n\nSweden and Finland are both in the Schengen area. That means a flight from Umeå arrives in the Schengen part of [Helsinki Airport](https://www.loungefrog.com/airports/hel), with no passport check on arrival. Travelers heading on to another European city stay in that zone. Those flying on to Asia, North America or the UK pass through passport control into the non-Schengen area before their next flight.\n\nEach side of the airport has its own lounges:\n\n* In the Schengen area, the [Finnair Business Lounge & Platinum Corner](https://www.loungefrog.com/lounges/hel-finnair-business-lounge-schengen) serves departures within Europe.\n* Past passport control, the larger [Finnair Business Lounge](https://www.loungefrog.com/lounges/hel-finnair-business-lounge-non-schengen) has showers and a full bar.\n* The [Finnair Platinum Wing](https://www.loungefrog.com/lounges/hel-finnair-platinum-wing), also on the non-Schengen side, is the top tier and is rated highest of the three on Lounge Frog.\n\nAll three admit travelers under oneworld's lounge rules, which generally key on a business class ticket or oneworld Sapphire or Emerald status. The exact rules differ from lounge to lounge, so check the terms for your ticket and status before you go.\n\nFinnair's loyalty program is [Finnair Plus](https://www.loungefrog.com/airlines/ay), and members of other oneworld programs can earn on these flights as well.\n\n## Waiting at Umeå and Vaasa\n\nUmeå Airport is a regional field, and Lounge Frog does not yet list a lounge there. Travelers starting their trip in Umeå should plan on the main departure area, and save lounge time for the connection in Helsinki. Lounge Frog does not list a lounge at Vaasa either.\n\n## Why this route matters\n\nNorthern Sweden has fewer international links than Stockholm or Gothenburg. For many travelers there, the usual way to start a long-haul trip is a domestic flight south to Stockholm Arlanda. A stronger Helsinki connection gives them a second hub to choose from.\n\nIt also suits Finnair's strategy. The airline has long used Helsinki as a short-transfer gateway between Europe and Asia. Feeding more passengers in from smaller Nordic cities fills seats on its long-haul flights, and gives those cities more one-stop options.\n\nLina Blom, Finnair's regional manager for Sweden and Denmark, said the added frequencies give both leisure and business travelers more options and smoother connections through Helsinki.\n\nThe schedule begins November 30, 2026. Swedavia's release gives no end date for the added flights.","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"}]}
