JGC Premier, the top earned tier inside the JAL Global Club, is being renamed JMB Premier, and the change is about a lot more than the name. The new tier drops the requirement to be a JGC member, but it also takes away two perks that made it special.\n\nJapanese frequent flyers noticed fast. A [post from @ana_mile2016](https://x.com/ana_mile2016/status/2105218942897893651) reacting to the September 30 announcement drew about 495 likes and more than 180,000 views. Japanese trade outlets Aviation Wire, Travel Watch and TRAICY all covered the change.\n\n## What's changing\n\nUntil now, JGC Premier required both a year of flying and membership in the JAL Global Club. Since January 2024, joining JGC has required, among other conditions, at least 1,500 Life Status points, which build up over years of flying and other activity with JAL. Under the new setup, that JGC requirement goes away. The tier will be earned on flying alone and will be called JMB Premier, part of [JAL Mileage Bank](https://www.loungefrog.com/programs/jal-mileage-bank).\n\nThe new qualification rules apply to flights from January 1, 2027, counted over a calendar year:\n\n* **80,000 FLY ON points,** with at least 40,000 on JAL Group flights, or\n* **80 flights,** with at least 40 on JAL Group flights, plus 25,000 FLY ON points.\n\n## What you keep\n\nThe headline benefits stay. According to JAL's announcement as reported by Aviation Wire and Travel Watch, JMB Premier members keep:\n\n* **First Class lounge access** at JAL's lounges\n* **Diamond and Premier security lanes**\n* **Front seat selection** and **priority boarding**\n* **oneworld Emerald** status, which opens oneworld first class lounges worldwide\n\nKeeping First Class lounge access matters. JAL's First Class Lounge at Haneda's North Wing has [just reopened after renovation](https://www.loungefrog.com/news/jal-haneda-north-wing-first-class-lounge-reopens-october-2026), and JAL is [renovating its Haneda Terminal 1 lounges](https://www.loungefrog.com/news/jal-haneda-terminal-1-north-south-wing-lounge-renovation).\n\n## What you lose\n\nHere is the trade-off:\n\n* **Miles will expire.** JGC Premier members had miles that never expire. JMB Premier loses that. Mile expiry will instead follow your Life Status star grade or whether you hold a JAL card. JGC Six, Five and Four Star members' miles never expire. JGC Three Star, JMB Elite, Elite Plus and JAL CLUB EST members' miles expire after five years. Regular members' miles expire after three years.\n* **Service Selection is gone.** JMB Premier drops the Service Selection benefit, the menu of perks Premier members choose from each year.\n\nIn exchange, JMB Premier members get a new 10,000-mile bonus.\n\nJAL's top tier is changing too. From fiscal 2028, JMB Diamond members get a new 20,000-mile bonus. Diamond Metal members, the most frequent Diamond flyers, keep their 30,000-mile bonus and gain Service Selection. Their airport standby priority moves above Diamond and Premier. Aviation Wire also reports that a free international ticketing fee benefit is ending.\n\n## When it happens\n\nThere's no need to panic yet. JGC Premier status earned by flying in 2026 is not affected, and the status year that starts in fiscal 2027 keeps today's benefits. The benefit changes start with the fiscal 2028 status year, earned by flying in 2027.\n\nRegular JGC membership, JMB Sapphire and JMB Crystal are not changing.\n\n## Our take\n\nDropping the JGC requirement makes the tier simpler: fly enough in one year and you're in, even without years of Life Status points. But losing non-expiring miles is a real downgrade for anyone without high Life Status, and dropping Service Selection takes away one of the tier's most flexible perks.\n\nA 10,000-mile bonus doesn't make up for miles that start expiring. In our view, JAL has kept what most travelers see, the First Class lounge and Emerald status, while trimming the benefits that cost it money over time.\n\nIs JMB Premier a fair trade? Tell us in the comments.\n\n## Related reading\n\n* [JAL business class to Europe for 38,500 miles: JAL's 30% off award sale, and the catches](https://www.loungefrog.com/news/jal-award-sale-30-percent-off-europe-business-october-2026)","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"}]}
