On October 19, 2026, the airline said it cut the distance threshold for United Economy fresh-food preorder from more than 1,190 miles to more than 900 miles on flights across North America and the Caribbean.","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"},{"role":"body","format":"markdown","text":"According to [United's announcement](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/united-expands-meal-preorder-to-shorter-flights-giving-up-to-65-000-more-customers-per-day-access-to-time-saving-benefit-302912550.html), that opens preorder on about 420 more flights per day and gives up to 65,000 more customers per day a chance to order ahead. Hub pairs that now sit in the new band include Chicago–Houston, Denver–San Francisco, and Houston–Washington, D.C.\n\n## How preorder works now\n\nYou can preorder fresh Bistro on Board meals and other eligible retail items on united.com or in the United app from five days before departure until 24 hours out. On the website, look under Trips. App users get a notification when preordering opens for their flight.\n\nUnited says the rotating fresh menu includes sandwiches, burgers, pasta, and breakfast items. Current examples in the release: a pork mojo burrito, a Chicago patty melt by Jeff Mauro of Mauro Provisions, a hot honey chicken and waffle sandwich, and a cinnamon apple waffle, plus the airline's snackboxes and snacks.\n\nUnited notes that preordered meals may not be available under certain circumstances. Treat the order as a convenience, not a guarantee if catering or equipment changes.\n\n## Why United is pushing this\n\n\"We want our customers to have more of what they value when they fly – more choice, more convenience and a better experience onboard,\" said David Kinzelman, United's chief customer officer, in the release. He tied the meal change to other onboard investments. Those include free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members on equipped jets, seatback screens with Bluetooth, and larger bins.\n\nUnited says Starlink now covers its entire two-cabin regional fleet and more than 280 mainline aircraft, with fleetwide installs expected in 2027. Live sports on Starlink seatbacks recently added TBS for playoff baseball, on more than 200 aircraft and about 900 flights a day, alongside other major networks. Seatback installs are aimed at up to 1,000 aircraft by the end of 2027, including new jets with 27-inch 4K OLED screens.\n\nFood keeps moving too. Starting November 1, United says it will refresh the Tapas, Takeoff, and Recline snackboxes. A limited Wishes snackbox with Make-A-Wish is also in the mix.\n\n## What to do before you fly\n\nIf your North America or Caribbean United Economy segment is over 900 miles, check Trips or the app as soon as the five-day window opens. Shorter hops under that cutoff still follow the old buy-onboard pattern unless United says otherwise.\n\nThis change does not add lounge access. Meal preorder is an onboard retail perk. Lounge entry still depends on your cabin, status, or card. For United Clubs and Polaris lounges, see [United](https://www.loungefrog.com/airlines/united) access rules separately from the food cart.\n\nFor travelers who hate waiting in the aisle for the last sandwich, the new 900-mile line is the useful number. Save the release date: October 19, 2026. Then verify your specific flight in the app, because aircraft swaps and catering still decide what actually shows up.","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"}]}
