Analysis and opinion · Sources checked October 4, 2026.

A lounge can have excellent food, beautiful furniture and a drinks list that reads like a hotel bar's. None of it helps when your boarding pass and its opening hours refuse to cooperate.

Even early-opening lounges require a little arithmetic. Amex lists its Heathrow Centurion Lounge as opening at 5:30 a.m., and its September 2026 Amsterdam announcement gives that new location a 6 a.m. opening. Those hours can work beautifully for one itinerary and leave barely enough time for coffee on another. Heathrow's official listing and Amex's Amsterdam announcement.

A benefit can be real, generous on paper and practically useless for your actual schedule. Opening before your aircraft leaves is a very low bar. Opening early enough for a relaxed visit is the test that matters.

Departure time is the wrong deadline

Travelers often make the lounge calculation backward. They see a flight leaving at 7 a.m. and a lounge opening at 6, then imagine an hour of breakfast.

That hour has other jobs. You need to get from the lounge to the gate. Boarding begins before departure. Your airline has its own cutoff. Add a terminal transfer, a queue at reception or a bathroom stop, and the leisurely breakfast becomes coffee carried at an anxious speed.

Use the time you need to be at the gate, not the time the aircraft is scheduled to leave. Then work backward through the walk and the entry process. Whatever remains is the lounge visit you can realistically value.

A nominal thirty-minute opening overlap might be useful beside the gate. The same overlap across an airport might be pointless.

Network size cannot solve a timing mismatch

This is why a large lounge network should not automatically impress you. Count usable visits on routes you take at times you travel. A hundred irrelevant locations do less for you than one reliably available room near your usual gate.

For the same reason, a review written during a calm afternoon tells an early commuter very little about breakfast value. Opening hours belong near the top of a lounge review, alongside terminal location and access restrictions. They are part of the product.

There is a fair business case for limited hours: staffing an almost empty room overnight costs money. Nobody needs to pretend otherwise. But travelers should apply equally unsentimental arithmetic when deciding what to pay.

Before renewing a card or buying a pass, compare several upcoming trips with the current official hours. Check again close to departure, because schedules can change. Have a breakfast alternative picked out before reaching the airport.

The best lounge in the world is a bad purchase for a traveler who keeps meeting its locked door.
