A long-haul flight is a loud place. Engine drone sits near 80 decibels for hours, and the lounge before it is not much quieter. Good active noise canceling (ANC) headphones turn that roar into a soft hush. They also make the lounge a place where you can take a call or watch a show in peace. This guide covers six current models that suit frequent flyers. Five are over-ear headphones. One is a pair of earbuds for people who want to pack light.
Why ANC matters at 35,000 feet
Low, steady noise is where ANC shines. Microphones pick up the drone, and the headphones play an inverted signal that cancels much of it. That means you can listen at a lower volume, which is kinder to your ears on a 14-hour sector. It also helps you sleep. In the lounge, ANC handles the hum of air conditioning and coffee machines. Voices are harder to block, so look for a good seal and thick ear cushions as well.
What to look for
Battery life matters most. Thirty hours covers a round trip to Asia with room to spare. A fast-charge mode is useful when you only have ten minutes at the gate. Weight affects comfort after hour six. Anything over 350 grams can press on the top of your head. Multipoint pairing keeps a laptop and a phone connected at once, which is handy for working in the lounge. A firm case protects the headphones in an overhead bin. A wired option is also worth having for seatback screens, since most still lack Bluetooth.
The picks at a glance
The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the all-rounder. Sony lists up to 30 hours with noise canceling on, support for LDAC and LC3, and multipoint pairing. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are the comfort and quiet pick, with up to 30 hours of battery and a 15-minute charge that gives three hours. The AirPods Max 2 suit iPhone users best, with eight ANC microphones and lossless audio over USB-C. The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless lists up to 60 hours on a charge, the longest in this group. The soundcore Space One Pro is the value pick, and it folds down to half its size. For earbuds, the AirPods Pro 3 give up to eight hours with ANC and weigh 5.55 grams each.
Over-ear or earbuds?
Over-ear headphones block more low-frequency noise and are easier to sleep in on a lie-flat seat. They also hold more battery. Earbuds win on packability and work better if you wear a hat or hood. Some travelers carry both: earbuds for the lounge and the gate, over-ears for the flight itself. If you only want one, choose over-ears for flights longer than six hours.
Lounge tips
Keep a short USB-C cable in your bag. Most lounges have outlets near the seats, and ten minutes of charging can add hours of playback. Switch to the Aware or Transparency mode before you order food so you hear your name called. If you work from the lounge, pair the headphones to your laptop first, then your phone. Some lounges have quiet rooms or outdoor terraces where ANC is less needed; see our guide to lounges with outdoor terraces and our top lounge rankings to find one near your gate.
How we chose
We did not test these headphones ourselves. The picks are based on specifications published by each manufacturer and on the consensus of published, independent reviews. Battery life, weight, codec support, multipoint and case details come from the manufacturer pages linked above. We favored models sold new in 2026 that have a fast-charge mode, since that is the feature frequent flyers use most. Prices change often, so we left them out. Check the retailer page for the current price before you buy.

Best overall for long-haul flights
Sony WH-1000XM6
The WH-1000XM6 is the safe pick if you want one pair of headphones for every trip. Sony rates it at up to 30 hours with noise canceling on, which covers a US-to-Asia round trip without a charge. Multipoint pairing means you can work on a laptop in the lounge and still take calls from your phone. LDAC and LC3 support keep it current with newer phones and in-flight devices.
- Up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise canceling on, and up to 40 hours with it off
- Weight approximately 254 g
- Bluetooth 5.3 with SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3 codec support
- Multipoint connection supported
- Charging time approximately 3.5 hours via USB
- Carrying case included in the box
The tradeoff: Sony lists a charging time of about 3.5 hours and does not publish a quick-charge figure on its spec page, so plan ahead if your battery is low before a flight. At roughly 254 grams it is light for its class, but the clamping force can feel snug on a long overnight sector.

Best for comfort and cabin quiet on overnight flights
Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
Bose built its name on cabin quiet, and the second-generation QuietComfort Ultra keeps that focus. Quiet, Aware, Immersion and Cinema modes let you switch from a sealed cocoon at your seat to a lighter setting in the lounge when you need to hear an announcement. A 15-minute charge gives about three hours, which is enough for the last leg when you forgot to top up. Wired USB-C audio means you can plug into a laptop for lossless playback during a layover.
- Up to 30 hours of battery life per Bose's headline spec; Bose's footnote gives 24 hours in Quiet Mode and 18 hours with Immersive Audio
- 15-minute charge provides about 3 hours of playback
- Headphone weight 0.583 lb
- Bluetooth 5.4
- Four listening modes: Quiet, Aware, Immersion and Cinema, with CustomTune sound calibration
- Wired USB-C audio accepts 16-bit, 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz from compatible sources; carry case included
The tradeoff: Bose quotes up to 30 hours in its headline spec, but its own footnote gives 24 hours in Quiet Mode and 18 hours with Immersive Audio on, so expect the lower numbers on a long flight. The page does not list multipoint, and the headphones fold flat into a soft carry case rather than a hard shell.

Best for iPhone and Mac users
Apple AirPods Max 2
If your travel kit is all Apple, the AirPods Max 2 is the most seamless choice. An H2 chip in each ear cup drives eight noise-canceling microphones and Transparency mode, so you can switch from cabin quiet to lounge chatter with one press. Lossless audio over the USB-C cable is handy for movies on a laptop during a long layover. Live Translation can help in a foreign-airport lounge if you carry a compatible iPhone.
- Up to 20 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation enabled
- 5 minutes of charging provides around 1.5 hours of listening time
- Weight 13.6 ounces (386.2 g) including cushions
- Apple H2 chip in each ear cup; Bluetooth 5.3
- Eight microphones dedicated to Active Noise Cancellation, plus Transparency mode
- Lossless and ultra-low-latency audio over a wired USB-C connection; Smart Case included
The tradeoff: At 386 grams it is the heaviest headphone in this group, and that weight is noticeable after several hours in a seat. Apple rates it at 20 hours with ANC, the shortest among the over-ear picks here, and the Smart Case protects the battery but offers little impact protection in a bag.

Best battery life for multi-leg trips
Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless
The MOMENTUM 4 Wireless is the pick for travelers who hate charging. Sennheiser rates it at up to 60 hours with ANC on, enough for a week of flights and lounge visits on one charge. A ten-minute top-up adds up to six hours, so a quick stop at a lounge outlet covers a transatlantic leg. The 42 mm drivers and aptX Adaptive support give a fuller sound than most rivals for music on a long sector.
- Up to 60 hours of music playtime via Bluetooth with ANC on
- Up to 6 hours of playback from a 10-minute charge
- Hybrid adaptive active noise cancellation using 4 microphones
- Bluetooth 5.2 with SBC, AAC, aptX and aptX Adaptive codecs
- 42 mm drivers
- Carry case included
The tradeoff: Its hybrid adaptive ANC is good but is not as strong as the Sony or Bose at cutting low cabin drone. The headphones do not fold, so the carry case takes more bag space, and Sennheiser's page does not list multipoint under supported profiles.

Best value and most packable over-ear
soundcore Space One Pro by Anker
The Space One Pro gives frequent flyers the key travel features without the flagship price. It folds down to half its size, so it fits in a carry-on pocket next to a tablet. Anker rates it at 40 hours with ANC on and 60 without, and a five-minute charge adds eight hours. Multipoint pairing and six ANC microphones make it a capable lounge workhorse.
- Up to 40 hours of playtime with ANC on and 60 hours with ANC off
- 5-minute charge provides 8 hours of music
- Weight 286.2 g (10.10 oz)
- Adaptive ANC 3.0 using a total of 6 microphones
- Folding design reduces size by 50 percent
- Multipoint connection supported; LDAC available on Android via the soundcore app
The tradeoff: At 286 grams it is heavier than the Sony and Sennheiser, and the ANC does not reach the depth of the Bose or Sony on a loud widebody. LDAC works only with Android devices, and Anker notes it cannot be used while two devices are connected at once.

Best earbuds for light packers
Apple AirPods Pro 3
For travelers who refuse to carry a headphone case, the AirPods Pro 3 are the earbud pick. Apple rates them at eight hours with ANC and 24 hours with the case, which covers a long-haul flight plus the lounge on both ends. Each bud weighs 5.55 grams, so they are easy to sleep in on your side. The IP57 rating means a sweaty sprint to a connecting gate will not harm them.
- Up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge, and up to 24 hours with the case
- 5 minutes in the case provides around 1 hour of listening time
- Each earbud weighs 5.55 g; the charging case weighs 43.99 g
- Apple H2 chip; Bluetooth 5.3
- IP57 dust, sweat and water resistance for earbuds and case
- Case charges via MagSafe, Apple Watch charger, Qi-certified chargers or USB-C
The tradeoff: Earbuds cannot match over-ear headphones at blocking engine rumble, and you will need to recharge the buds in the case during a 14-hour flight. Features such as Live Translation and the Hearing Aid function require a recent iPhone, so Android users lose much of the value.
