Carnival Freedom is back from the shipyard, and it looks different. The ship now has a new whale tail funnel, a bigger casino and more upgrades. Carnival Cruise Line shared the news on October 8, 2026. It also opened bookings for a new 2028 and 2029 season from Norfolk, Virginia.
A 35-day dry dock in France
Carnival Freedom spent 35 days in dry dock at Chantier Naval de Marseille in Marseille, France. Dry dock is when a ship leaves service so crews can fix, repaint and upgrade it.
The most visible change is up top. The ship got a new version of Carnival's famous whale tail funnel. Carnival says the new funnel sits lower than before. That lower height will let the ship reach more ports.
What's new on board
Carnival listed these changes from the dry dock:
- A bigger casino. The casino was redesigned and gained more than 100 extra gaming machines.
- A refreshed arcade. The video arcade got an update.
- New shops. The retail areas were updated.
- Better access. Carnival made accessibility upgrades across the ship.
- A new bow crest. The ship now shows Carnival's "From Sea to Shining Sea" crest. Carnival says the crest celebrates its place as "America's cruise line."
The release does not list prices or say whether cabins changed.
Where Carnival Freedom goes next
The ship's route back to the United States includes two long trips. Carnival Freedom was due to reach Barcelona, Spain, on October 9. From there, it will take guests on an 8-day Mediterranean cruise. Then it will sail a 13-day transatlantic trip as part of Carnival Journeys.
Carnival Freedom will reach Port Canaveral, Florida, on October 30. It will sail from there through May 2027. After that, it will move to Norfolk, Virginia.
New Norfolk cruises for 2028 and 2029
Carnival has opened bookings for the ship's new 2028 and 2029 season from Norfolk. These trips run through April 2029. They are six to eight days long and head to:
- The Bahamas
- Bermuda
- The Eastern Caribbean
- Canada
Stops include Celebration Key, RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk and Amber Cove.
The ship will be based in Norfolk until at least April 2029, based on the trips now on sale.
Another ship back from dry dock
Carnival Freedom is not the only Carnival ship with a fresh look this month. On October 5, Carnival said Carnival Radiance was back in Long Beach, California, after a 15-day dry dock at the Seaspan shipyard in Victoria, Canada. That ship got a renewed Effy jewelry shop, refreshed indoor and outdoor guest areas, and the same "From Sea to Shining Sea" bow crest.
Carnival Radiance has gone back to sailing year-round from Long Beach. It offers four- and five-day trips to Baja Mexico and the Mexican Riviera, with stops such as Ensenada and Catalina Island. It also runs some 14-day Carnival Journeys trips to Hawaii.
What it means for cruisers
If you are booked on Carnival Freedom from Port Canaveral this winter, expect a ship with a new funnel and a bigger casino. If you live near Norfolk, the new 2028 and 2029 season gives you plenty of choice, from short Bahamas runs to trips to Bermuda and Canada.
