Analysis and opinion · Sources checked October 4, 2026.

Imagine the scene: a lounge sign in sight, an $18 sandwich in your hand, and somebody ready to explain that you are doing travel wrong.

Maybe you are. Perhaps you already have eligible access, the room is quiet and you simply forgot the benefit.

Or perhaps the sandwich is the sensible choice.

The price and distance in this scenario are illustrative. The underlying mistake is real enough: treating “included with my card” as if it means “always the best option.”

The guest can cost more than the meal

Under the published U.S. Consumer and Business Platinum policy, adult guests at U.S. Centurion Lounges normally cost $50 each. Eligible cardholders can unlock admission for up to two guests after meeting the $75,000 annual spending requirement. Check the rules for the exact card and location before assuming a companion enters free. Centurion Lounge access policy.

In our $18-sandwich example, paying a $50 guest charge for somebody who only wants lunch would require more than a nice buffet to make financial sense.

There may be other value: a shower, a long comfortable wait, a place to charge devices. Count those if you will use them. Do not invent them afterward to justify a decision you made because walking past the lounge felt wasteful.

The cost you cannot put on the receipt

Waiting has a price even when nobody charges your card.

Amex’s digital waitlist lets eligible travelers join a queue through the app at participating lounges, but the eligibility code does not guarantee entry. Amex’s waitlist explanation.

That means the relevant comparison is the visit you are likely to get. How long before boarding? How long to the gate? Will entry leave enough time to sit down and eat without watching the clock?

A lounge thirty seconds away can be effectively useless if you spend the available time waiting outside it. A restaurant with immediate service may deliver more of the comfort you wanted.

The annual card fee is another trap. Once paid, forcing an unhelpful visit does not recover it. What matters at that moment is which choice makes the rest of the journey better.

Before entering, check three things: your eligibility, the full cost for everyone traveling with you, and the usable time remaining. Then consider whether you actually want the available food.

If the answers favor the lounge, use it enthusiastically. Benefits are there to be enjoyed.

If they favor buying lunch and sitting near the gate, that is not a personal failure or a lack of travel sophistication. It is a sensible decision under the circumstances.

The most expensive sandwich can be the one you avoid while spending money, time and patience proving that your lounge access was worth it.
