The Airport Restaurant Might Beat Your Lounge. Even If You Paid for the Card.
A meal you actually want, near your gate, can beat a buffet you feel obliged to use. The annual fee is already spent.

Analysis and opinion · Sources checked October 4, 2026.
There is a particular kind of airport stubbornness that begins with “but I have access.”
It sends people across a terminal for food they do not especially want. It makes a visible restaurant table look wasteful because somewhere behind a membership desk there might be a complimentary one. It turns a perk into an assignment.
Sometimes the better decision is to buy lunch.
That is not evidence of a mass traveler revolt. It is an argument for comparing the options in front of you instead of treating lounge entry as the objective of the trip.
The terminal has a menu too
At San Francisco International, Napa Farms Market describes an airport deli and café built around Northern California food, with locations in Terminal 2 and the international G area. That does not prove its meal will beat every lounge buffet. It does establish a more interesting alternative than the stereotype of a miserable packaged sandwich. Napa Farms Market.
Portland offers another reason to look beyond the lounge door. The airport operator explicitly describes making space for local shops and restaurants, placing them within the airport’s broader passenger experience. Port of Portland.
The restaurant advantage is choice. You can read the menu, see the seating and decide whether the price is worthwhile. There may still be a wait, the food may disappoint, and airport dining can be expensive. But the choice does not require you to prove that you are extracting value from a card you already own.
The lounge has legitimate advantages too: somewhere to work, included refreshments and, at some locations, a shower or quiet space. A long layover can make that bundle compelling.
Compare the next hour, not the annual fee
Imagine two options: a restaurant near the gate with a dish you want, or a distant lounge with an uncertain entry wait. The restaurant bill buys food, but it may also preserve your remaining time.
Now reverse the circumstances. You have several hours, immediate lounge admission and work to finish. The lounge may win comfortably.
The decision changes with the trip. That should be obvious, yet loyalty programs encourage travelers to turn access into a personal achievement.
A better rule is to ask what you need right now. A full meal? A quiet call? A shower? Coffee and somewhere to sit? Compare the available places against that need.
Paying an annual fee is a reason to evaluate the card when renewal arrives. It is not a reason to spend today’s layover proving the purchase was clever.
The best airport meal is allowed to come with a receipt.
