American's app can now watch for a better seat and move you into it for free

AAdvantage members can set seat preferences when they book. The app then watches for a match and switches the seat, up to 24 hours before departure.

Stuck in a middle seat? American Airlines now has an app feature that keeps looking for something better for you. The airline announced it on September 28 in a press release. Members pick the kind of seat they want, and the app moves them into it when one opens up.

How it works

The steps are simple:

  • When you finish booking, you choose your seat preferences, such as window, aisle or middle.
  • The American app watches seat availability for your flight.
  • It checks any open seat against your preferences and the airline's eligibility rules.
  • When it finds a match, it updates your reservation and sends you a notification.

American says you stay in control of your preferences and any change to your seat.

The fine print

There are some limits. According to American's release:

  • It is for eligible AAdvantage members. You need to be logged in as a member.
  • It works only on reservations with one passenger. Couples and families are not covered yet.
  • You must already have an assigned seat.
  • You opt in when you book.
  • The app keeps looking until 24 hours before departure.
  • Moves stay inside your current cabin. It will not upgrade you to a higher class.

There is no extra charge for the change. American also says it will not move you into a paid seat that costs more, even if that seat matches what you asked for. So you will not get a surprise fee.

Who built it

American says the feature came out of its ADEPT program. That is a two-year development program for early-career tech staff. The team used AI-enabled tools to help design and build it.

Heather Garboden, American's Chief Customer Officer, said: "This latest innovation proactively addresses customer preference." Ganesh Jayaram, its Chief Digital and Information Officer, called it "technology that removes work from the customer and makes the travel experience feel more seamless."

How to get the most out of it

This tool is most useful when you book early and the plane is fairly full. Seats free up as elites get upgraded, as other people change flights and as blocked seats are released. Before, you had to keep checking the seat map yourself. Now the app does that for you.

A few tips:

  • Set the preference at booking. You cannot count on the app if you skip that step.
  • Turn on notifications, so you see the change.
  • If you care about a specific row, such as an exit row or a seat near the front, you may still want to check the seat map yourself. The release describes broad preferences like window or aisle.

What it means for premium travelers

If you fly in a premium cabin, the feature still helps. It can move you from a middle seat in a three-seat row in the main cabin, or to a window in a premium cabin, as long as the seat is in your class. It does not replace upgrade lists, which work on their own rules.

You can see American's fleet on our American Airlines page. If you are flying from a hub, our Dallas Fort Worth page and Charlotte page list the lounges you can use before your flight.

My take

This is a small but genuinely useful change. Checking a seat map ten times before a trip is a chore, and now the app does it for you at no cost. I hope American expands it to bookings with more than one traveler soon.
