What's new on American's fall lounge menus: snapper ceviche in Miami, a taco bar in Chicago

American has new fall dishes in its Flagship lounges and Admirals Clubs, each tied to specific airports. Here is what is being served, and where.

American Airlines has refreshed its lounge food for the fall. In a September 22 press release, the airline listed new dishes for its Flagship lounges and Admirals Club lounges. Each dish is tied to certain airports, so what you find depends on where you fly from. The airline calls these a preview of its fall menus for September and October.

Flagship lounges

Flagship lounges are American's top lounges for long-haul premium travelers and top elites. The new dishes are:

The release also points to Flagship Dining, American's sit-down meal service, at DFW and Miami. In Flagship lounges, you can also order freshly made dishes by scanning a QR code.

Admirals Club lounges

The Admirals Club is American's main lounge network. It is open to members, some cardholders and some premium travelers. The fall dishes are:

  • A build-your-own beef barbacoa taco bar in Chicago, Denver and St. Louis.
  • Sesame orange glazed chicken in Los Angeles, Santa Ana, San Francisco and Phoenix.
  • Creole-style chicken on a rustic white bean cassoulet at New York's JFK and LaGuardia, and at Newark.

The taco bar is the most hands-on of the new items. A build-your-own station tends to work well when a lounge is busy, since you can grab a quick plate between flights.

How to make the most of it

Lounge menus change with the season, and the press release does not say how long each dish will stay. If a dish catches your eye, plan to visit sooner rather than later. A few tips:

  • Check the hours before you go. A dish served at lunch may not be out late at night.
  • In Flagship lounges, try the QR code ordering. It is the easiest way to get something hot and fresh made for you.
  • If you have a long connection at DFW or Miami and access to Flagship Dining, it is worth leaving time for a proper meal.

Who can get in

Access rules differ between the two lounge types, and they change from time to time. Check our lounge pages for the current rules, or see our airport pages for Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles and New York JFK. If you hold a oneworld elite status or fly in a premium cabin on a oneworld airline, you may have access even without an Admirals Club membership. Your boarding pass and status decide which door you can use.

Why it matters

Food is one of the main things that sets a good lounge apart from a crowded waiting room. Regional dishes, like ceviche in Miami or adobo in Dallas, also make each lounge feel less generic. American has been putting more effort into its lounges lately, from new clubs in Charlotte and Chicago to more dining in Flagship lounges. Seasonal menus are a small but visible part of that push.

My take

I like that American is matching dishes to the city, and snapper ceviche in Miami sounds like the standout. That said, a few new dishes will not fix a crowded lounge. If you have a choice of lounges, I would still pick the one with seats before the one with the new menu.
