American’s Starlux codeshare earns miles, but award redemption is still to come

American Airlines and Starlux have launched a codeshare partnership that adds a new way to book travel between the United States and Taipei. Flights under the agreement began September 30, 2026.
The useful loyalty detail is already live: American says AAdvantage members can earn miles and Loyalty Points when booking an American codeshare flight operated by Starlux. That is narrower than a full partnership covering every Starlux reservation, award booking and elite benefit.
What American has announced
In its official announcement, American identifies Taipei flights from Los Angeles, Ontario, San Francisco and Seattle. Phoenix service under the arrangement is subject to regulatory approval.
American's website and app offer business, premium economy and economy on the covered Starlux services. The airlines say mileage redemption and additional travel benefits are areas for future work. They have not presented those future elements as available now.
That distinction corrects an easy misunderstanding: an agreement can provide mileage earning before it provides award redemption. Travelers should read the scope of the current offer rather than assuming every feature begins on the same day.
Check the flight number you buy
A codeshare allows a flight operated by one airline to be sold under another airline's code. The aircraft and crew do not become American's simply because an American flight number appears in your reservation.
For AAdvantage earning under this announcement, check that you are buying the American-coded Starlux flight. A Starlux flight number found through a separate search does not establish the same earning terms.
Before paying, review the fare, the mileage crediting information and the operating carrier on each segment. Keep a copy of the itinerary you bought. This is especially useful on a trip that combines a domestic connection with a long flight to Taipei.
Starlux adds North American connections
Starlux's own announcement describes connections to 20 North American destinations through American's network. It highlights the ability to book an itinerary on one ticket and through-check bags, subject to local customs procedures.
That may simplify a trip for passengers who previously had to piece together separate reservations. It does not remove customs obligations or guarantee that every connection suits your schedule. Check the airport, connection time and baggage instructions for the actual trip.
Do not assume lounge reciprocity
For Lounge Frog readers, the main caution is access. This codeshare announcement does not publish a complete new set of reciprocal lounge or elite benefits. An American flight number alone should not be treated as proof that a particular Starlux lounge will admit you.
Look at the operating carrier's invitation for your cabin and route. If you plan to rely on status or a credit card, confirm that specific entitlement separately. The earning of Loyalty Points and entry to an airport lounge are different questions.
Use the Taipei airport directory and the page for your US departure airport to check locations before you travel. The partnership creates a useful new booking and earning option today. Award redemption and further reciprocal benefits need a separate announcement before readers can plan around them.
