How Guarulhos's terminals shape the choice

São Paulo Guarulhos has three terminals, and the lounge count is lopsided. Terminal 3 is the international building and holds a dozen lounges, including every airline flagship and most of the bank-card rooms. Terminal 2 handles domestic flights plus some international ones and has eight lounges of its own. Terminal 1 is small and has one. The buildings are connected, but each has its own security and its own airside zone, so you pick from the terminal on your boarding pass.

Guarulhos has one more quirk. Several of its best rooms belong to Brazilian banks and card issuers and do not sell entry at all. We list only lounges that have at least one photo on file, which trims this year's list to five. All five are rooms you can get into with the right card or ticket. 1. W Premium Lounge - 5th Avenue

W Premium Lounge - 5th Avenue leads at 4.7 and is the room American Express sends its Platinum and Centurion cardholders to in Terminal 3. It is not a Centurion Lounge, so US Platinum guest rules do not apply: Platinum cardholders bring one guest and Centurion members bring two. It holds about 150 people, has a full bar and two showers, and scored five on almost everything, including crowding, quiet, service and workspace. Food and views were the only metrics at four. Hours are not published, so check before an early departure.

2. W Premium Lounge - The Pier

W Premium Lounge - The Pier also rates 4.7, and this one takes Priority Pass, LoungeKey and DragonPass. It sits at the far end of the Terminal 3 pier on the right side, close to the boarding gates, and serves international flights only. It is open 24 hours with room for 300, a full bar and four showers that cost extra. Stays are capped at three hours and the lounge can turn card members away when it fills. Food, drinks, views and showers all scored five. On a long international connection this is the room to aim for.

3. American Airlines Admirals Club

The American Airlines Admirals Club scores 4.6 and sits on the Terminal 3 mezzanine above the duty free area, up the escalator after passport control. It is compact at 150 seats, with a full bar and two showers. Members bring immediate family or two guests, business and first passengers on a qualifying international ticket bring one, and oneworld Sapphire and Emerald members get in on their status. Day passes are sold to anyone with a same-day American or oneworld ticket. Coffee, food, quiet and workspace all scored five.

4. LATAM VIP Lounge (International)

The LATAM VIP Lounge (International) is the biggest room in the building, with space for 600 and eight showers. It rates 4.6 and opened in 2015 on the Terminal 3 mezzanine, up the escalator opposite duty free near gate 301. It is open 24 hours. Entry is for LATAM Premium Business passengers and LATAM Pass Black and Black Signature members, who may bring one guest. Service, showers, views and workspace scored five. Because it is so large, it rarely feels crowded even at the evening peak.

5. Plaza Premium Lounge (T2)

Domestic flyers get the Plaza Premium Lounge (T2), which rates 4.6 and sits airside in Terminal 2 serving gates 201 to 224. It is open from 05:00 to 23:00, holds 150 and has a full bar and two showers. Priority Pass, LoungeKey and DragonPass all work, and walk-up entry is sold by the hour. Food, quiet, restrooms, service, showers and views each scored five. If you are on a domestic hop it is as good as anything across the way in Terminal 3.

What did not make the list

Guarulhos has several higher-rated rooms that we could not include because no photo is on file yet. The Espaço Banco Safra Lounge, the former Star Alliance Lounge, and the Terminal 3 Plaza Premium both rate 4.8. Casa BB rates 4.7, and the Nubank Ultravioleta Lounge, the SkyTeam lounge and the W Premium Lounge in Terminal 2 all sit at 4.5 or above. Watch the airport page, because once those are photographed this list will change a lot.

Where to look next

Our rankings draw on ratings across fourteen metrics, explained on the methodology page. The generated page at the GRU top five updates as reviews arrive, and the airport page lists all 21 lounges across the three terminals.
