Citi’s Strata bonus rules now exclude previous cardholders

Citi’s current terms look beyond a waiting period. Check your card history before counting a welcome bonus toward a premium travel plan.

Citi's current Strata application terms contain an important restriction for returning customers: a new-account bonus is unavailable if you currently have or previously had the relevant card.

The wording appears on Citi's official Strata comparison page, checked October 11, 2026. It matters if you are considering Strata Elite for its lounge benefits and treating the welcome bonus as part of the first year's value.

The card names that count

For Strata Elite, Citi names a current or previous Strata Elite account. For Strata Premier, it names both Strata Premier and the earlier Citi Premier account. For the standard Strata card, it names Strata and Strata Student.

The same page says eligibility can also depend on your history of opening, closing and using credit cards. These are the current published conditions, rather than a promise about how every future offer will work.

A past Citi Premier account is therefore worth checking even if you never held a card with the newer Strata Premier name. The product name on an old statement may matter more than the name you remember from a recent advertisement.

Why lounge travelers should care

Strata Elite is the lounge product in this comparison. Citi lists Priority Pass Select membership and four Admirals Club passes each calendar year. Those are distinct benefits, with their own admission conditions, rather than a single unlimited entitlement to every airport club.

The welcome bonus is separate again. Failing the bonus conditions does not mean Citi has announced the removal of the card's lounge benefits. It means a returning applicant should not assume that spending on a new account will produce the advertised new-account reward.

That distinction can change a card comparison. A reader counting a large bonus toward a future premium flight may reach a different conclusion when that bonus is unavailable. The lounge benefit should still be assessed against airports and trips the reader actually uses.

Review your history before applying

Look through earlier account records for the precise product name. If the card changed names or was converted from another product, ask Citi how the application terms apply to that history before making a decision based on a bonus.

Save the offer and its eligibility wording from the application channel you intend to use. Citi notes that offers can vary across channels. An advertisement seen elsewhere is not a substitute for the terms attached to your application.

Avoid using an old article's waiting-period description as proof of current eligibility. The live wording is the useful starting point, especially for a card you once held and closed.

Compare the ongoing airport benefit

For lounge access, map your regular departure airports and connections first. Ask which usable lounges the card provides, whether guests are covered and whether the admission method requires enrollment or a separate pass.

Then compare that airport value with the annual fee and benefits you can realistically use. Four airline-club passes may suit occasional trips, while a frequent traveler may need a different arrangement. A network membership can be less useful when its available lounge is in the wrong terminal.

Use Lounge Frog's airport directory to check the locations that matter to your itinerary. Citi's current terms make one thing clear: previous ownership belongs in your decision before you count a welcome bonus, even when the card's travel benefits still appeal.
