Charlotte's CLT Beyond plan would expand Concourse C and add a tunnel, pending a new airline deal
Charlotte Douglas has named the projects in its next building push: a bigger Concourse C, a passenger tunnel and new international arrivals areas. The City Council hears the airline lease deal behind it on Oct. 12. No dates, costs or lounge plans yet.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport has put a name and a project list on its next round of building. The airport calls it CLT Beyond. It includes a bigger Concourse C, a new passenger tunnel to reach it, and a refresh of the areas international arrivals pass through. None of it is final yet. The plan depends on a new lease deal with the airport's airlines, and the Charlotte City Council still has to approve it.
The airport laid this out in an update on Oct. 8. City staff will present the deal to the council on Oct. 12. A review period follows, and the council will vote at a later meeting. The airport has not given a cost, a start date or an opening date for any of the projects.
What CLT Beyond includes
The airport says the program covers nearly a dozen projects across the terminal, the airfield and the wider campus. It named seven of them:
- Concourse C expansion: a new concourse with more gates.
- Passenger tunnel: a link from the main terminal to the larger Concourse C.
- International arrivals: renovations to the areas used by arriving international passengers.
- Airfield work: changes needed to open and run a fourth parallel runway.
- Core systems: replacing and updating essential systems, including electrical.
- International concourse: planning and design for more international gates.
- Atrium: planning and design for a future expansion of the terminal atrium.
The first five describe actual construction work. The last two are listed as planning and design work, so travelers should not expect new international gates or a bigger Atrium soon. The airport has not said how many gates the new Concourse C will add.
The tunnel is the item frequent CLT flyers may notice most. Today, travelers reach the concourses through the central terminal and Atrium. The airport says the tunnel will connect the main terminal directly to the larger Concourse C. The airport has not said where the tunnel will start or how long the walk will be.
Why a lease deal comes first
The airport's current deal with its signatory airlines took effect on July 1, 2016. It was due to end on June 30, 2026, but the two sides agreed in June to extend it while talks went on. The signatory airlines are American, Delta, Frontier, Southwest and United.
These agreements matter more than their dry name suggests. They set who controls which gates and spaces, who pays for upkeep, and how the airlines share the cost of new buildings. In practice, a new concourse at a hub like Charlotte rarely moves ahead without one. The airport says the new deal rests on four goals: capital projects, a stronger financial position, flexibility in operations, and looking after existing buildings.
The airport says the talks are kept confidential under North Carolina's public records law until they are done. That is why the update is light on numbers.
What it means for lounges
The airport's update does not mention lounges at all. Lounge space at CLT is decided by the airlines and lounge operators that lease it, not by the airport's building list. Still, the timing lines up with a busy stretch for lounges at the airport.
American, which runs its second-largest hub at Charlotte, said on Oct. 6 that it will build its largest Admirals Club in the Atrium. The airline says the club will top 40,000 square feet and that work starts this year. The Atrium expansion in CLT Beyond is only at the design stage, so it is not clear how the two projects relate.
For now, here is where lounge guests go at CLT:
- Admirals Club, Concourse B, with a full bar and two showers.
- Admirals Club, C/D connector, the closest full club to today's Concourse C.
- Provisions by Admirals Club, a small grab-and-go space.
- The Centurion Lounge for Amex Platinum cardholders.
- The Club CLT, open to Priority Pass, LoungeKey and DragonPass members.
- Delta Sky Club for Delta and SkyTeam flyers.
If Concourse C grows and gets its own tunnel, the C/D connector club will matter more to American flyers. Whether American adds lounge space on the new concourse is up to the airline. It has not said.
The Oct. 12 council presentation
The Oct. 12 presentation is at 5 p.m. in Room 267 of the Government Center. The city will stream it live. That should be the first public look at the deal's terms. The council vote comes after a review period that the airport did not define.
The airport says it handles nearly $40 billion a year in economic activity and supports about 184,400 jobs in the two Carolinas. Those figures explain the stakes for the city. For travelers, the questions are simpler: how many gates, when, and where the lounges go. We will update our Charlotte airport page once the airport shares a timeline.
