Banks Can Approve Cards in Seconds. Lounge Seats Take Years.
The mismatch between selling access and building capacity is easy to understand—and much harder to fix with another QR code.

Analysis and opinion · Sources checked October 4, 2026.
A credit card application can be finished during a coffee break. The lounge promised in its marketing may still be a construction project several years later.
American Express says instant credit-card approval decisions can arrive in seconds or minutes, although approval and immediate use are not guaranteed. Eligible applicants may receive an instant card number before the physical card arrives. That is the speed of the sales side of the business. Amex’s explanation of instant approvals
For the building side, consider Newark. The Port Authority’s September 2023 announcement described a roughly 18,000-square-foot Centurion Lounge expected in 2026. As checked on October 4, Amex’s location page still described a 2026 opening as expected. Port Authority announcement, Amex’s Newark page
That gap helps explain the capacity problem. It does not prove the cause of any particular queue, and an instant card number is not necessarily an instant lounge credential.
You cannot download another room
Selling one more membership does not require another kitchen, restroom or square foot of terminal space. Hosting one more member eventually does.
Physical facilities have fixed limits. And airport demand is inconveniently concentrated: ten empty chairs at one time do not compensate the traveler who arrives when every chair is taken.
This is the flaw in treating annual network growth as a complete answer to crowding. More space is valuable, but its usefulness depends on where it opens and when people need it. A new lounge at another airport does little for the queue in front of you.
The sales pitch and the capacity plan therefore need to be judged together. If a bank wants lounge access to be a headline reason to buy its card, reliable availability should be part of the product’s performance.
A waiting list manages disappointment
A digital queue can reduce the irritation of physically standing at reception. It cannot manufacture seating.
Nor is restricting access a painless solution. Higher guest charges, fewer visits or tighter eligibility can protect the experience for those admitted while reducing the value for others. The trade-off should be described honestly, rather than packaged as an uncomplicated enhancement.
The useful questions for an issuer are operational: How often do eligible members get in? How long do they wait? How many abandon the attempt? Those figures would tell customers more than another rendering of a cocktail bar.
For travelers, the practical response is smaller and more immediate. Evaluate the lounges on your actual routes, keep track of unsuccessful visits and resist valuing an announced opening as an available benefit.
A future lounge may be wonderful. Until its doors open, it is doing an excellent job of seating nobody.
