AirAsia highlights Kuala Lumpur's top low-cost megahub ranking in OAG's 2026 report

The carrier cites nearly 15,000 possible low-cost connections at KUL. A network ranking does not guarantee a protected itinerary.

AirAsia says Kuala Lumpur International Airport retained first place in OAG's 2026 Low-Cost Megahubs Index. The airline's September 17, 2026, release also cites KUL as fourth globally for international connectivity and first in Asia Pacific.

For a traveler, the ranking points to the range of possible connections through Kuala Lumpur. It does not establish that every pair of flights can be booked as one protected itinerary, or that all connections use the same terminal.

What the airline is citing

In its official announcement, AirAsia attributes the figures to OAG's 2026 Megahubs report. It cites connections to 154 destinations and nearly 15,000 possible low-cost connections.

The airline says it accounts for 34% of flights at KUL and describes itself as the airport's dominant carrier. These are the figures reported in AirAsia's release, rather than a new calculation by Lounge Frog.

The rankings concern network connectivity. They should not be treated as a score for lounge quality, transfer speed or the experience of clearing immigration.

A large number of possible connections can create useful choices. It also means travelers need to pay attention to which specific flights, airlines and terminals form their trip.

A possible connection is not always one booking

When comparing itineraries, check whether the airline sells the full journey together. Read the conditions for missed connections, checked bags and any required airport formalities.

If the flights are separate purchases, allow for the steps between arrival and the next departure. A favorable network ranking does not remove the need to collect baggage or check in again when those steps apply.

Also consider the time of day. A cheap overnight connection may require food, accommodation or a longer wait than the headline fare suggests.

For a trip with a fixed event at the far end, weigh those costs against a more direct itinerary. The largest connection network does not automatically produce the best journey for every passenger.

Kuala Lumpur has two terminal plans

Lounge Frog has separate guides to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, or klia2. Confirm the terminal for both the arriving and departing flights.

The directory lists the Travel Club Lounge near klia2 Gate L8 and Travel Club Lounge in the klia2 satellite. Their locations make them different planning options from a lounge in Terminal 1.

Other listings include the Plaza Premium Lounge at the Contact Pier and Sky Suite Airport Lounge in the satellite.

Do not choose a lounge solely because it appears under KUL. Check the terminal, side of security, access conditions and opening hours for the flight you will take.

What matters beyond the ranking

AirAsia's release presents the network as supporting tourism, trade and regional mobility. Those are the carrier's stated benefits of a broad hub operation.

For a passenger, the practical questions are more specific: can the itinerary be bought together, is the transfer time sensible, are the bags included and what happens after a delay?

The airline has separately announced restored Ahmedabad and Amritsar flights, which add context to the network's reach. Check their actual operating dates rather than assuming a route map implies daily service.

Kuala Lumpur's reported connectivity gives travelers a wide set of options. Use the ranking to identify possibilities, then let the actual booking, terminal and connection conditions determine which one works.
