The big one is in Houston, the surprise is in Ankara

The last ten days of October brought three lounges into service. One is brand new and enormous. One is a rebuilt room in a city most of our readers have never flown through. The third is a familiar lounge that came back from a short closure looking different enough to be worth a fresh visit. Here they are, in order of how much they matter to a typical traveler.

Houston: the largest United Club anywhere

United's new Terminal B North concourse at George Bush Intercontinental opened on October 22, and the United Club on its mezzanine is the headline. United's announcement puts it at 54,000 square feet with seating for about 800, which the airline says makes it the largest club of any airline in the Americas. There are two full-service bars, two buffet stations, eleven private phone rooms and a 1,350-square-foot outdoor terrace that looks straight at the runways.

Upgraded Points' first look adds the practical details. The entrance is near gate B11, and hours are 5:30 am to 9 pm daily. The room is split into four zones: the Gravity Garden, with blue loungers along the windows; the central Lasso Lounge, built around a wraparound bar; a family corner with a Pac-Man machine; and the Moonshot Lounge for work, with high-top seats, phone booths and a tequila bar. The menu is Texan. Expect smoked brisket, a green chile chicken enchilada casserole, a taqueria bar and tres leches cake. There are no showers. If you need one, the Polaris Lounge in Terminal E has them.

Access is standard United Club: members, holders of the United Club card, Star Alliance Gold members on a Star Alliance flight, and premium cabin passengers on long international routes. Individual members cannot bring guests; All Access members and cardholders can. One-time passes cost $59. Is it worth a detour? Yes, if you are anywhere in Terminals B or C. The Terminal C clubs are decent, but they fill up, and nothing else at IAH has a terrace.

Ankara: TAV's new Primeclass concept lands in Türkiye

TAV Operation Services reopened the Primeclass Lounge in the domestic terminal at Ankara Esenboğa on October 22, according to its press release and TRBusiness. It is the first lounge in Türkiye built to the company's new concept, which debuted in Sofia earlier this year and is due at Paris Orly next. The room grew to 380 square meters over two floors and now seats 135.

The idea is a lounge arranged by what you came to do. There are separate zones for working, eating, socializing and resting, a library stocked with books on design, travel and local culture, worktables with power at every seat, and lockable storage for bags. The bar is at entrance level under a paper ceiling installation, and the buffet sits downstairs, with a menu built on Anatolian ingredients, shared plates and plant-forward dishes. Local artists supplied the art. A lift links the two floors, and the reception desk and a toilet are accessible.

You will find it after the second security check, between gates 109 and 110. Priority Pass gets you in with a three-hour limit, and the lounge is open around the clock, though Priority Pass's listing notes that food is served from 7 am to 11 pm. Walk-in paid entry and online bookings are also accepted. Ankara is not a connecting hub, so this is a lounge for people who are already there. If you fly out of ESB on a domestic ticket with a Priority Pass card, go. It should be the best room in the terminal by a wide margin.

Sydney: the Centurion Lounge comes back brighter

American Express closed its Sydney Centurion Lounge on October 6 for a two-week refresh and reopened it on October 20. This was not a rebuild. The 600-square-meter footprint and 150 seats did not change. But Executive Traveller's first look shows that almost all of the freestanding furniture was replaced, the walls and floors got lighter, and the dining booths moved from gray to a deep blue. Nearly every seat now has AC, USB-A and USB-C power within reach, which fixes the old room's biggest complaint.

The Centurion members' nook lost its heavy vertical slats and gained low consoles, with à la carte service that includes Bollinger and a local single malt. Chef Khanh Ong still runs the all-day menu. For the first weeks there are canapés from 4 pm and a lychee-and-gin Coogee Cooler at the bar. A new self-serve station for soft drinks and snacks sits beside the Centurion area.

The lounge is on the lower level of Terminal 1, below gates 50 to 63, and opens from 5 am to 10 pm. Access is unchanged: Australian Platinum cardholders get in with one guest, Centurion and Corporate Platinum with two, and several other Amex cards share two visits a year. Overseas-issued Platinum cards work too. Melbourne is next. Its Centurion Lounge closes from November 9 to 23 for the same treatment.

Coming next

A few more are close. Brussels Airlines' THE LOFT is still scheduled for November, according to the Lufthansa Group. Dnata's Rayleigh Lounge at Western Sydney should open before Singapore Airlines' first flight on November 23. Plaza Premium's Sydney T2 domestic lounge, the airport's first pay-per-use domestic room, is due in early December with entry from AU$29, per 2PAXfly. Chase now has approval for its Seattle Sapphire Lounge, but that one is years away. Emirates promised its redesigned Istanbul lounge for October. We could not confirm that it opened, and we will check again next week.
