Thai AirAsia returns to Suvarnabhumi with flights to Chiang Mai, Krabi and Phuket

Thai AirAsia resumed flights from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi on October 1, 2026, restoring direct services to Chiang Mai, Krabi and Phuket. The airline lists six daily flights to Chiang Mai, two to Krabi and five to Phuket.

For passengers arriving on an international flight at BKK, the return creates more domestic choices from the same airport. It also makes the airport code more important when comparing Thai AirAsia flights, because the carrier continues to operate from Don Mueang.

What has returned

In its October 1 release, AirAsia says all three restored routes began operating that day. It reports that the inaugural services had a combined load factor above 82%. That is the airline's description of the opening flights, not a forecast of seat availability for your date.

The stated daily frequencies provide a useful starting point for planning. Confirm the live timetable before purchasing, since departure times and aircraft assignments are not set out in the announcement.

The airline presents Suvarnabhumi as a complement to its main Don Mueang base. It does not describe a full move between the two Bangkok airports. A search for Bangkok can therefore return flights with different ground journeys and connection requirements.

One city, two different airport plans

When an international arrival and a domestic departure both use Suvarnabhumi, you avoid the journey between BKK and DMK. You may still need to clear immigration, collect a checked bag and check in again, depending on the booking.

The release's language about convenient connections should not be read as a promise that any two flights can be combined safely. Check whether the airline sells the full itinerary together and what happens if the arriving flight is late.

For a trip starting in Bangkok, compare the journey from your home or hotel to each airport. A slightly cheaper flight can lose its appeal when the ground transfer takes much longer.

Lounge planning follows the same rule. A room listed at Don Mueang cannot be used for a flight departing Suvarnabhumi, even if both tickets say Bangkok.

Choose a domestic lounge

Lounge Frog lists the Miracle Lounge in Suvarnabhumi's domestic Concourse D and Coral Executive Lounge in the domestic area. Those are more relevant starting points for these routes than the airport's international airline lounges.

At Don Mueang, the domestic Terminal 2 guide points to a different set of facilities, including the Miracle Lounge and Coral Executive Lounge.

The announcement does not introduce a lounge benefit. Confirm your card or program's current eligibility, guest fees and the room's hours. Do not infer access from a lounge's presence in the same airport.

Extra help for older travelers

AirAsia also highlights services for passengers aged 60 and above: dedicated check-in counters, priority baggage claim and adjacent Standard seats, subject to availability. Ask the airline how these work on the specific route and departure.

The new airport choice could be useful for travelers who prefer to keep a long-haul arrival and domestic flight at BKK. It can also help Bangkok residents choose the closer airport.

Before paying, read both airport codes, the flight date and the final baggage allowance. The clearest benefit of the restored service is flexibility, and it works best when the rest of the journey is planned around the right Bangkok airport.
