The airport is getting a little less closed off. The lounge is not automatically following it.
TSA's Gateside by TSA PreCheck program launched at thirteen airports in September 2026, allowing approved participants without airline tickets to go beyond security. The agency described uses including greeting arriving passengers, accompanying loved ones and visiting terminal shops or restaurants. TSA's September announcement, republished by Public Technologies.
For anyone accustomed to overcrowded lounge conversations, the immediate reaction is predictable: more people through security must mean more people chasing the buffet.
That leap skips a separate door and a separate set of rules.
Security access and lounge access are different permissions
American Express's published Platinum terms require qualifying same-day departing travel for Centurion Lounge admission. A Gateside pass is not a departing flight. Amex's access terms.
The practical distinction is straightforward. TSA decides who may enter the secure terminal through its program. A lounge operator decides whether that visitor meets its own admission conditions. Being allowed into the building does not create a new card benefit or waive a boarding-pass requirement.
Other lounge products have their own terms, so travelers should check the specific location rather than extrapolate from one brand. Nothing in the program's basic premise amounts to universal lounge access.
Nor is Gateside an unrestricted invitation to wander in off the street. The Associated Press reported that eligible participants must apply online one to three days before the intended visit and receive approval. The initial thirteen-airport rollout included Los Angeles, Dallas–Fort Worth, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. AP's September 8 coverage.
Watch the right pressure points
Additional visitors could affect checkpoint demand, terminal seating or restaurant queues. How much depends on participation, timing and local conditions. We have not established that Gateside has caused longer lounge waits, and predicting an invasion is not a substitute for measuring one.
There are also obvious benefits. Meeting a tired relative closer to arrival, sharing a meal during someone's connection or spending a few more minutes together before departure can make an airport feel less transactional.
Those improvements deserve to be evaluated on their merits, alongside any operational effects. Lounge anxiety should not become a reason to oppose every person who enters a terminal without a suitcase.
If you plan to use Gateside, check TSA's current airport list and application requirements before making arrangements. If you also hope to enter a lounge, verify its rules separately and ask whether a non-ticketed visitor qualifies.
The relevant question is not how many people can reach the corridor outside.
It is how many meet the conditions for the room inside. Until those conditions change, a new security pass is not a new lounge pass.
