Airport lobster is real. So is the irritation of buying a meal in the terminal while another passenger disappears into a dining room where nobody presents a check.
But before you get angry at the sandwich in your hand, check which lounge is serving the seafood. The most extravagant meals often sit behind a much higher barrier than a credit card.
Boston puts the divide behind a second door
Boston makes the divide unusually easy to see. When Delta opened its Delta One Lounge there in December 2024, it advertised three-course dining with dishes including a warm Maine lobster roll, octopus carpaccio and cod Milanese. That was the airline's published opening menu, not a promise that every dish will appear on your next visit. Still, it makes the point: airlines know perfectly well how to serve something more ambitious than a sad wrap. Delta's Boston opening announcement.
The lounge sits inside the Terminal E Sky Club near Gate E13. Entering the Sky Club does not automatically get you through the next door. Delta explicitly says Sky Club memberships and qualifying credit cards do not unlock Delta One Lounges. The normal route is a qualifying premium ticket, with separate provisions for certain partner passengers and Delta 360 members. There is no general day pass. Delta One Lounge locations and access rules.
So yes, one passenger can pay separately for a sandwich while another eats an included seafood meal in the same airport. The second passenger usually paid for the privilege somewhere else. Calling the lobster free conceals the most expensive part of the transaction.
That distinction also matters before anyone books an upgrade just to win lunch. Delta's Basic Business fares retain Delta One Lounge access for travel through January 18, 2027; that inclusion ends the following day under the announced rules. A lie-flat seat will no longer necessarily come with the dining room. Read the fare details, not just the cabin name. Delta's explanation of its expanded Basic fares.
The terminal deserves a decent meal, too
The real insult is not that premium passengers get premium food. Nobody needs a lecture on why a more expensive ticket comes with more things. It is the suggestion that everyone outside the lounge should treat decent food and somewhere comfortable to eat it as an extravagant aspiration.
The terminal is not automatically a culinary wasteland, either. Massport lists Legal Sea Foods, Monica's Mercato, Stephanie's and other restaurants in Terminal E. Those are actual alternatives, not consolation prizes for people who failed a status test. Compare the menu and the time you have before deciding the lounge must win. Boston Logan's official dining directory.
If you already qualify for the dining lounge, using it can be an excellent deal at that moment. If you do not, buying a costly access route to avoid paying for lunch is a very expensive way to feel clever.
The sandwich-versus-lobster comparison gets attention because the contrast is visible. The bill behind the lobster usually isn't. Airports should offer a pleasant meal on both sides of the lounge door, even if only one side gets the seafood served on someone else's schedule.
