Lounge waitlists 101: does joining from the curb actually work?

Amex and Capital One let you queue from your phone, Chase mostly makes you stand at the door, and Delta has no virtual list at all. Here is how each waitlist works and when joining early actually helps.

The short answer: sometimes, and it depends entirely on whose lounge it is. Capital One lets you join its list on the way to the airport. Amex lets you join through its app, but the timing rules and a 10-minute return window mean joining before security rarely gets you anything. Chase mostly still makes you walk up to the desk to get on the list. Delta Sky Clubs have no virtual list at all. Here is how each one works as of October 2026, and where I could not pin down the details.

How a lounge waitlist works

Every system I looked at follows the same basic pattern. The lounge hits capacity, you get a place in a queue, you go somewhere else, and you get a text or push notification when it is your turn. Then a short clock starts. If you miss that window, you go back to the end of the line. The real differences are where you can join from and how long you have once you are called.

That return window is what decides whether joining from the curb makes sense. A 10-minute window works when you are already airside. It does not work if you are still in the security line when the text arrives.

Amex Centurion: app-based, with a 3-hour gate

Amex runs its digital waitlist through the Amex app. When you request entry, the app either issues a QR eligibility code right away or, if the lounge is full, puts you in the queue. When space opens, you get a notification and have 10 minutes to reach the lounge and check in. Amex says plainly that the code does not guarantee entry, because it remains subject to capacity and the usual access rules.

Here is the part people miss. To use the app, you confirm that you have a same-day boarding pass and ID and that you are within three hours of departure. That is the same 3-hour rule that applies at the front desk (see how early you can get into a lounge). I could not find any published GPS or geofence requirement, so the app may well accept a request from the taxi line. Even so, the reports I trust advise against it: Your Mileage May Vary recommends waiting until you have cleared security, and The Points Guy says to open the app once you are about 10 minutes from the lounge. If the text arrives while you are still taking off your shoes, the 10 minutes run out and you start over.

The waitlist only applies to US Centurion Lounges, and only to US Platinum and Delta Reserve cardmembers. Thrifty Traveler, last updated December 2025, listed Denver as the one US exception and said the international lounges do not have the feature. Amex's September 2025 app launch described the waitlist as network-wide. Those two sources conflict, so check the app at Denver or abroad before you count on it. And even with an eligibility code, there can still be a short physical line at the desk. You skip the uncertainty, not always the queue. For which Centurion Lounges get the worst waits, see Centurion waitlists by airport.

Capital One: the one that really works from the curb

Capital One is the most straightforward. Its app shows each lounge's current capacity and lets Venture X and Venture X Business cardholders join the waitlist remotely, including on the way to the airport or after landing on a connection. When it is your turn, you get a text and have 15 minutes to arrive. That is five minutes more than Amex gives you, and it matters if you are coming from the far end of a concourse.

I did not find a published rule on how far ahead of departure you can join, or whether the smaller Capital One Landings use the same list. If you plan to join from home, check the app first.

Chase Sapphire Lounges: mostly join at the door

Chase lags here. At the Las Vegas Sapphire Lounge, which has an 87-person capacity on our page, Gary Leff of View from the Wing reported in December 2025 that you had to stand in line to get onto the waitlist and then got a text when it was your turn. The app had no way to join remotely and showed no wait time. His summary: you wait to find out how long you will wait.

The exception is Phoenix. Since June 2025, Sapphire Reserve cardholders can book an entry slot in the Chase app between 14 days and 24 hours ahead, and Chase recommends booking because walk-ups can be turned away. That is a reservation, not a waitlist, so you can't make one the same morning from the curb. Some traveller posts suggest the reservation option has spread to other Sapphire Lounges, but I could not confirm that from Chase, so treat it as unverified and look in the app under airport lounges. Remember that since August 15, 2026, most Sapphire Lounges admit only Sapphire Reserve and related cardholders, not general Priority Pass members (what changed).

Delta Sky Club: no virtual waitlist

I found no evidence of a Sky Club virtual queue in the Fly Delta app as of October 2026. Delta handles crowding with physical priority lanes. At peak times, Delta One passengers, Delta 360 members, Diamond Medallions, and first class passengers with club access go to the front, and everyone else waits in the regular line. Writers covering the clubs this year still describe lines outside the door. So joining from the curb is not an option. What you can control is which club you head for at a hub like Atlanta, where you have several to choose from.

Priority Pass and The Club: lounge by lounge

Priority Pass does not run a network-wide waitlist that I could find. Each operator manages its own capacity, and plenty of Priority Pass lounges simply turn people away at the desk when they are full. The Club lounges, a large share of US Priority Pass inventory, are reported to use a QR-code text waitlist when full, with about 10 minutes to return once you're called. One guide says some locations' waitlist links are public and can be joined before you reach the door. That comes from a single third-party source and I could not verify it with The Club, so don't plan around it.

So, should you join from the curb?

  • Capital One: yes, that is what the system was built for.
  • Amex Centurion: join once you are through security, or at least confident you will be through in a few minutes. Joining earlier is allowed within the 3-hour window but gains you little, and a missed 10-minute window costs you your spot.
  • Chase Sapphire: you mostly cannot join from the curb. Book ahead at Phoenix, and check the app elsewhere.
  • Delta Sky Club and most Priority Pass lounges: no. Walk up and see.
