Rio's Galeão airport runs everything from Terminal 2, so the question is not which building but which side of the pier you are on. Domestic and international departures use separate areas, and the lounges are split the same way. Plaza Premium and GOL each run one room for domestic flights and one for international, and your boarding pass decides which you can use. Then there is a lounge most airports do not have: a 24-hour arrivals lounge on the landside car park building. For connections and early departures it is the most useful room at Galeão, which is why it leads this list.
Ratings are Lounge Frog overall scores out of 5, with ties listed alphabetically. Only lounges with a photo on file are ranked, which keeps two strong rooms off the list this month; they are named at the end.
1. Plaza Premium Lounge (Arrivals)
The Plaza Premium Lounge (Arrivals) scores 4.6, tied for the top mark at Galeão. It is landside, on the second floor of the car park building, and it never closes. Inside are a full bar, four showers and about 150 seats, and every rated category scores four or five. Priority Pass, LoungeKey, DragonPass and Plaza Premium members get in for a maximum two-hour stay. Day beds, premium alcohol and showers cost extra. Because it is before security, it works for arriving passengers, for people meeting them and for anyone with a long gap before check-in opens.
2. Plaza Premium Lounge (Domestic)
The Plaza Premium Lounge (Domestic) also scores 4.6. It is airside on the first floor of the South Pier near gates B27 and B28 and is open around the clock, with a full bar, two showers and about 100 seats. The same four networks get you in, again with a two-hour limit. It is domestic flights only, so check your boarding pass before you walk over. Reviewers rate it clean, quiet and well staffed.
3. Plaza Premium Lounge (International)
The Plaza Premium Lounge (International) scores 4.4 and serves the international pier. It has a full bar, two showers and about 150 seats, with quiet, seating, restrooms and showers all scoring five. Access is narrower than at the domestic room. DragonPass and Plaza Premium members get in, and walk-up entry is sold by the hour, but Priority Pass is not listed here. If you hold Priority Pass on an international flight, the GOL lounge below is your fallback.
4. GOL Premium Lounge (International)
The GOL Premium Lounge (International) scores 4.0. It is on the third floor of the South Pier, reached by walking through the Duty Free shop after security and taking the stairs or elevator up. There is beer and wine only, two showers and about 120 seats, with hours from 5 in the morning to 11 at night. Priority Pass and LoungeKey members get a four-hour stay, which is generous for a long-haul wait. Massage chairs cost extra.
5. GOL Premium Lounge (Domestic)
The GOL Premium Lounge (Domestic) scores 3.5 and is the largest room on the list at about 200 seats. It is on the second floor opposite gates B36 and B37, with beer and wine, two showers and the same four-hour limit for Priority Pass, LoungeKey and DragonPass members. Service and seating score three, so the Plaza Premium domestic lounge is the better choice if you can get in.
The two near misses
The real number one at Galeão is the Star Alliance Lounge, which scores 4.7 with four showers and full marks for food, service and quiet. The American Airlines Admirals Club scores 4.4, with a full bar, two showers and strong marks for food and workspace, and it admits oneworld Sapphire and Emerald elites as well as members. Both were left out only because neither has a photo on file right now. Once they do, expect the Star Alliance Lounge to go straight to the top of this list.
