Your “Complimentary” Airport Lounge Visit Can Still Produce a Painful Bill.

The most expensive word at an airport lounge desk might be “complimentary.”

It can describe the membership that lets you request entry. It can describe a limited number of visits. It can describe access through one credential while a different credential triggers a charge. Those are three very different offers wearing the same attractive adjective.

A successful scan at reception can leave you feeling the matter is settled. The terms attached to the membership may say otherwise. What looks like a perk at the airport can become a purchase on your next statement.

HDFC Bank’s terms updated September 30, 2026 specify a $27-equivalent charge plus taxes per person, per visit when Priority Pass is used within India on listed products including Regalia Gold and Tata Neu Infinity. The charge also applies to visits beyond the included allowance outside India and to guests under that provision. Those are named-card rules, not a blanket rule for every HDFC product. Membership is not the meal

The trap is conceptual before it is financial. A complimentary membership can make you an eligible customer without making every visit free.

The geography matters too. A lounge in an Indian international departures area is still in India. Do not assume that “international lounge access” means any room near an international gate.

Even premium products require attention to the credential. HDFC’s Infinia lounge-access document directs primary and add-on holders to use their Infinia credit card for complimentary access within India. It expressly describes complimentary Priority Pass visits outside India, using each holder’s own membership. Follow the product’s instructions rather than assuming that every access method produces the same bill.

The number on the bill needs context

A dollar-denominated fee does not translate into a fixed rupee charge forever. Taxes, applicable conversion terms and the number of people admitted affect the eventual amount. Guests can turn one mistaken assumption into several.

Approval at reception is not confirmation of a zero-cost visit. The lounge can recognize a valid membership while the issuer applies its own billing rules later.

That design puts too much interpretive work on a customer who is trying to catch a flight. Banks could make it much clearer by showing the applicable price before each visit is recorded.

Until then, check your current issuer terms before traveling. Confirm the specific credential, remaining allowance, country restriction and guest policy. At reception, ask what is being recorded and retain the receipt.

If a charge appears, compare it with those terms and raise a documented query with the issuer or membership provider. Do not assume the fee is either automatically legitimate or automatically fraudulent.

A free benefit should not require this much homework. But homework is still cheaper than learning the distinction from your statement.
