India’s “Free” Lounge Perk Has Become Homework. Banks Should Stop Pretending Otherwise.

A card promises airport lounge access. You remember the promise. At the airport, the desk needs to know which card, which quarter, which network and whether this particular lounge participates.

Somewhere between the advertisement and the reception counter, a simple perk has become homework.

India’s lounge debate is often reduced to whether the food is overrated or whether too many people now qualify. The more practical question is whether customers can reliably understand what they have bought.

A benefit loses value when its owner cannot tell whether it will work until standing at the door.

The spending rule can be the real gatekeeper

ICICI Bank’s published Credit Card Experience page says eligible customers must spend at least ₹75,000 in a calendar quarter to unlock domestic lounge benefits in the following quarter. It also identifies exceptions for particular premium cards. That is a card-specific program rule, not a requirement covering every Indian credit card. ICICI Bank’s official benefit page.

There is a rational business reason to link benefits to customer spending. Banks can decide which products they want to subsidize.

But the customer-facing result needs to be exceptionally clear. A large headline about lounge access and a much smaller explanation of when spending qualifies invite disappointment. Customers should be able to see their eligibility, remaining visits and participating locations before leaving home.

The answer to a minimum-spend requirement is also not to buy things you do not need. A lounge meal cannot rescue the economics of unnecessary purchases.

Access partners matter more than the logo suggests

The benefit can depend on relationships beyond the issuing bank. In September 2025, reporting described DreamFolks suspending domestic airport lounge services after contract losses. That was a change involving an access intermediary, not a statement that every lounge in India had closed or every card benefit had vanished. The Economic Times report.

DreamFolks’ current terms describe it as a facilitator rather than a lounge owner and make access subject to operating conditions and availability. That distinction explains why the logo on an app cannot, by itself, settle the admission question. DreamFolks’ terms.

Travelers should check the issuing bank’s current instructions, the precise card variant and the lounge at their departure terminal. Confirm whether the required credential is a physical card, membership or voucher, and whether guests count separately.

That takes effort. It should not all fall on the customer.

Banks and access providers could make this less frustrating with a clear eligibility screen and prompt notice of changes. A perk people can understand is worth more than a longer list of conditional benefits.

India’s lounge access is not automatically worthless. But marketing it as effortless while customers untangle the conditions is asking for the backlash.
