At 6am and at the red-eye, lounge hours are what decide your visit. Here are 15 US lounges with their posted hours, which miss the first and last waves, and what is open nearby.

Most lounge comparisons are about food and showers. The more common way to lose a lounge visit is simpler: the door is locked. At a big US hub the first departures usually leave from about 6am, so people are clearing security from 4:30 or 5. The late bank and the transcontinental red-eyes leave between 10pm and midnight. A lounge that keeps 6am-to-9pm hours misses both, and a couple of well-rated bank lounges keep exactly those hours.

I went through the hours on our lounge pages for the busiest US airports and checked the notable ones against the operators' own sites. Here is where the gaps are and what to use instead.

The early trap: lounges that open after 5:30

The Centurion Lounge at Phoenix, rated 4.5, is the clearest example. Amex's own location page lists it at 6am to 9pm. If your flight is at 6:15, you are boarding before you have finished a coffee. In the same terminal, on the D pier, the Chase Sapphire Lounge, rated 4.8, opens at 4:30am and runs until 10:30pm, and Sky Harbor's own directory gives the same hours. It is the better lounge at both ends of the day, if you hold a Sapphire Reserve or are using your one Priority Pass visit of the year.

Phoenix also shows how unreliable published hours are. Amex says 6 to 9. The airport's lounge page currently says 7am to 8pm for the Centurion. One well-known points site lists 5am to 9pm. That is three different answers for one room, and I would trust the operator's page.

Los Angeles has the same problem in the international terminal. The Centurion at LAX, 4.6, is open 6am to 10pm, which Amex confirms. The Star Alliance Lounge upstairs does not open until 8:30am (9am on Sundays), which rules it out for any early departure. The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse works differently: Virgin says it opens about four hours before its own flights, and our listing has it opening at 11:30am. If you are in Tom Bradley early with oneworld status, the Qantas business lounge opens at 6:30am. For Delta flyers the Sky Club in Terminal 3, 4.7, runs from 4:15am to 12:30am, the widest window of any lounge on this list at LAX.

At Reagan National, the Capital One Landing opens at 6am, and the major guides agree on that time. For a 6am flight it is no help. Our listing mentions a grab-and-go counter that opens earlier, but the guides disagree on its hours, so I would not count on it.

At San Francisco, the Golden Gate Lounge in International Terminal A, the Priority Pass option there, opens at 7am. It is rated 2.9, so missing it is no great loss. The Club SFO in Terminal 1 opens at 4:30am and runs to 11:30pm according to its operator, which makes it one of the more useful Priority Pass lounges in the country for awkward times.

The late trap: lounges that close at 9

Evenings are worse, because of the red-eye. For a midnight departure you arrive at 9 or 10pm, which is exactly when many bank lounges are clearing out.

The Capital One Lounge at Dulles, 4.6, is open 5:30am to 9pm, and the major guides agree. For a 10pm departure to Europe, this lounge is already closed when you get there. On Concourse A, the Etihad lounge run with Chase is open until 10pm on our listing, but it is rated 3.1.

The Capital One Lounge at Denver, 4.7, closes at 9pm. Our listing opens it at 5am, though one guide says 5:30. The Centurion on Concourse C stays open an hour longer, until 10pm.

The Sapphire Lounge at LaGuardia, 4.8, is the highest-rated lounge in Terminal B and the first to open, at 4:30am. Chase's page has it closing at 9:30pm, though, with the note that hours may vary. In the same headhouse, the Centurion and the Capital One Landing both run 5am to 10pm. So which lounge I would pick depends on the time of day.

Then there is DCA's Centurion. The Centurion at Reagan is open 5am to 9pm Sunday through Friday but closes at 7pm on Saturdays, and both Amex and the airport list it that way. If you fly out on a Saturday evening, you are on your own.

The ones that solve it

The Capital One Lounge at JFK in Terminal 4 is open 24 hours. It is the only Capital One lounge that is, and I know of no Centurion or Sapphire Lounge in the US that matches it. For a late-night visit, the three-hour entry window is the only limit. Our 24-hour lounge roundup covers the rest of the world.

The Sapphire Lounge at Boston, 4.6, is open 5am to 11pm. One small catch for early flyers: Chase's page says only non-alcoholic drinks are served before 8am Monday to Saturday and before 10am on Sundays. In Las Vegas, the Sapphire Lounge runs 4:30am to 11pm, and the Centurion and the Capital One Lounge both stay open until 11pm too. Of all the airports I checked, it is the friendliest to a late flight.

Last entry and hours that move

None of the operator pages I checked publish a fixed last-entry time. The rule that actually limits you is the entry window, usually three hours before departure. The Club SFO lets Priority Pass and LoungeKey members in only 2.5 hours ahead. So arriving early does not get you around a late opening. And even with a posted closing time of 10pm, a lounge that is packing up at 9:45 is not much use. I would not plan a visit for the last half hour.

Hours also move. Priority Pass's conditions of use state that the network has no control over a lounge's opening and closing times. Airline lounges like Virgin's open around their own schedules, so their hours shift with the timetable. Escape Lounges keeps a seasonal-hours page for seven of its US lounges. When I checked, all seven were on normal hours, but the page is there because hours do change. Chase prints "hours may vary" next to its LaGuardia hours.

The practical advice is short. For any flight before 7am or after 9pm, check the lounge page the night before and confirm on the operator's own site rather than a third-party list. As Phoenix shows, those lists often disagree. Ratings here follow our methodology.
