Arriving between meals: when lounge buffets run dry, and where food comes out on demand
Most lounge buffets switch from breakfast to lunch somewhere around late morning, and the half hour either side can be thin. Here is what is known about the changeover at the big US networks, and the lounges where you can order a plate whatever the clock says.

Walk into a busy lounge at 10:50 on a weekday and you will often find the same scene: a tray of cold scrambled eggs nobody is refilling, a staff member wiping down the waffle station, and the lunch chafing dishes still empty. You have not arrived at a bad lounge. You have arrived at the changeover.
I want to be careful here, because lounges almost never publish their meal-period times, and the ones that do change them without notice. What follows is the pattern as it shows up in published menus and reviews, with the soft spots marked. Where I write "typically", I mean it.
The basic pattern
Buffet lounges in the US run in two or three blocks. Breakfast goes from opening until somewhere between about 10:30 and 11:30am. Then there is a lunch or "all-day" menu. Some lounges add a distinct dinner set in the afternoon, usually somewhere between 3 and 5pm; others just keep the all-day menu running until close and refresh it.
The thin moments are the minutes either side of each switch. Staff stop refilling breakfast items before the lunch items are ready, partly to cut waste and partly because the same kitchen is plating both. At a quiet lounge you lose ten minutes. At a crowded one, where the first lunch trays are cleared as fast as they come out, the gap can feel longer.
Network by network
Amex Centurion Lounges. These are the most predictable, because there are effectively two menus, not three. Upgraded Points' guides to the Houston and San Francisco lounges both put breakfast ending at 11:30am, with a single lunch-and-dinner menu running from then until 9pm. The later switch is helpful if you like a late breakfast and annoying if you wanted lunch at 11. Since mid-2025 roughly half of each Centurion menu comes from Amex's chef collective (Kwame Onwuachi, Mashama Bailey, Mike Solomonov, Sarah Grueneberg) and half is local, rotating seasonally, so the dishes change but the two-block structure has held. Note that SFO's Centurion is in a temporary Terminal 2 space while the Terminal 3 lounge is rebuilt, and I would not assume the old timings carry over exactly.
Delta Sky Clubs. Delta's own menu page describes "morning breakfast favorites and an all-day selection" without giving times, and the clubs vary a great deal by size. Reviews of individual clubs commonly describe the move to the all-day menu around 11am. NerdWallet's review of the Austin Sky Club describes hot and cold dishes that change through the day, breakfast first and then the all-day spread, without a clock time. Sky Clubs refresh rather than restart in the afternoon, so the 3 to 4pm dip is usually milder here than the morning one.
United Clubs. The standard United Club is a buffet covering breakfast, lunch and dinner. A Gourmet Flyer review of the SFO rotunda club noted hot soup appearing after 11am and rotating noodle and slider stations later in the day. That matches the pattern, but United does not publish a schedule and I have not found a current official one.
Admirals Clubs. American has been adding "action stations" through 2026, including bagel and waffle bars at a long list of hubs from January. One Mile at a Time noted in its look at the menu that some items, avocado toast among them, are only out during certain hours. I could not confirm a network-wide changeover time, so treat late morning as the likely gap and check with the desk.
Priority Pass. There is no network pattern because there is no network kitchen. Independent lounges run on their own operators' schedules, and smaller ones put out one breakfast and one lunch set with long refills in between. If food matters, the lounge's own website is a better guide than the Priority Pass app.
The lounges that solve it: cook to order
The real fix is a lounge that makes food when you ask for it, so the buffet does not matter.
Chase Sapphire Lounges. These are the best answer for most people with the right card. Chase describes the LaGuardia lounge as offering both self-serve and à la carte food, ordered by QR code to your seat, with made-to-order omelets at breakfast and dishes like the Sapphire burger later. One Mile at a Time found table ordering at Boston starting half an hour after opening, with plates arriving in about ten minutes. Readers there also point out that menu ordering and alcohol run on staggered hours, so the à la carte menu is not quite available for the whole time the doors are open. Access is now Chase cardholders only; see our Sapphire Priority Pass piece.
Capital One Lounges and Landings. At the 24-hour JFK Capital One Lounge, NerdWallet found hot dishes ordered by QR code from every seat, with self-serve small plates, a staffed grab-and-go counter, and a limited late-night QR menu when the main dining area closes. The LaGuardia Landing leans further toward ordering: self-serve small plates at the bars, but tapas and drinks ordered to the table, with The Points Guy reporting à la carte options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Neither publishes a changeover time, and with ordered food it matters less.
Delta One Lounges. At JFK, Delta says the 140-seat Brasserie serves a three-course menu daily from 11am to 9:30pm, alongside The Market for self-paced eating. Live and Let's Fly reported breakfast at The Market running until 10:30am, which leaves a short window before the Brasserie opens. Delta One passengers only.
United Polaris, Newark. The Newark Polaris Lounge reopened its dining room in June 2026 with an à la carte menu, running 5am to 10pm daily per Upgraded Points. Polaris business and Star Alliance long-haul premium passengers only.
American Flagship Dining, DFW. American opened Flagship Dining to business class on qualifying long-haul, transcon and Hawaii flights on September 15, 2026, per One Mile at a Time, at the DFW Flagship Lounge near D23 from noon to 10pm. That is a lunch-onward fix, not a breakfast one, and seating is first come, first served with a waitlist.
Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, JFK. The Clubhouse is built around a complimentary à la carte menu rather than a buffet, which is why it has long been the best morning option in Terminal 4. Its hours split around a midday closure, and the published times have changed more than once, so check Virgin's page before planning around it.
What I would do
If I land in a lounge at 10:45 and the eggs look tired, I ask the desk when lunch goes out. They always know, and the answer is usually "ten minutes". If I am choosing between two lounges in the same terminal around 11am or 3:30pm, I pick the one where I can order a plate. And at a Centurion Lounge, I time a late breakfast for 11:15 rather than an early lunch for 11. Ratings on this page follow our methodology.
