News and analysis · Sources checked October 6, 2026.
Etihad shut its lounge at Heathrow Terminal 4 on September 1, telling passengers the day before, and has now explained why. On September 16 the airline unveiled a new lounge design it calls Beyond Borders, and said the rebuilt Heathrow lounge would be the first to open in it, in summer 2027 (Etihad). The new space will have separate areas for business and first class, a private suite for passengers travelling in The Residence, a bar, dining, showers and meeting rooms.
The closure itself was handled badly. Head for Points reported that passengers found out with virtually no notice, and the airline gave no reopening date at the time (Head for Points). The lounge, which Etihad took back from No1 Lounges in 2019 after a spell as "The House", had been one of the better airline lounges in Terminal 4, with table-service dining.
Where Etihad passengers go now
Etihad has four daily departures from Terminal 4. The arrangements for the next nine or ten months, per Head for Points and InsideFlyer:
- Business and first class passengers, and Etihad Guest Gold and Platinum members, on the three daytime flights go to the Gulf Air Falcon Gold Lounge near gate 6, open 06:00 to 22:00.
- On the 21:45 EY68, first class and Residence passengers still use Gulf Air, but business class and elite members are sent to the Plaza Premium Lounge, the Priority Pass lounge, presumably because the Gulf Air room cannot absorb a full A380 or 787 business cabin on top of its own evening flight (InsideFlyer).
Gulf Air's lounge is pleasant, with high ceilings and good light, but it is a 120-seat room designed for one airline's schedule. The Plaza Premium lounge in Terminal 4 is among the best of its kind at Heathrow, though on a busy evening it is still a shared pay-in lounge. Neither offers the à la carte dining Etihad's own lounge had. If you hold a Priority Pass through a card, the Plaza Premium lounge is open to you regardless of what Etihad assigns you, which gives business class passengers on the daytime flights a second option if Gulf Air is full.
The wider picture at Terminal 4
Terminal 4's lounge scene is being rebuilt piece by piece. Air France opened a new lounge there in July, the Qatar Airways Premium Lounge remains the terminal's benchmark, and now Etihad is spending on a space it had let drift. The airline also says the Heathrow design will be rolled out to its other lounges, though it named no locations and currently operates only its Abu Dhabi lounges and two co-branded Chase Sapphire spaces in New York and Washington (One Mile at a Time).
Our take
A new lounge with a real first class section and Residence suites is good news for a terminal that has not had much of it. The way Etihad got there is not. Closing a flagship outstation lounge with 24 hours' notice, and then taking two weeks to say what comes next, is the kind of thing that costs an airline the goodwill it is spending millions to buy back. Summer 2027 is also a long time to send business class passengers to a partner's lounge or a Priority Pass room. If you are choosing between Etihad and Qatar out of Heathrow for the next year on ground experience alone, Qatar wins by default.
