American's lounge strategy in two buildings: a terrace club in Austin and a minimart with a barista at JFK

Construction on American's 12,000 sq ft Austin Admirals Club, its first with an outdoor terrace, is under way with a June 2027 target. At the other end of the scale, the grab-and-go Provisions format is heading to JFK.

American Airlines is building two very different kinds of lounge at once, and together they say more about where the Admirals Club is going than any single opening.

The first is in Austin. American announced in March that it would replace its roughly 6,000 square foot Admirals Club at Austin-Bergstrom with a new club of more than 12,000 square feet on the west side of the Barbara Jordan Terminal, the first lounge in its network with an outdoor terrace, looking toward downtown and the airfield (American Airlines). City documents put American's investment at about $10 million, with construction starting September 1, 2026 and completion scheduled for June 1, 2027 (Hoodline). The existing club stays open while the work happens.

The second is at JFK. On June 30 American said it would open a 3,700 square foot Provisions by Admirals Club in Terminal 8, on Concourse B between gates 12 and 14, by the end of 2026 (American Airlines). It is the second Provisions after the one that opened at Charlotte's gate A1 in August 2025, and the first with a barista bar making Lavazza drinks to order, which American says is a first for its lounge network. As of this week it has not opened.

What Provisions actually is

The Charlotte original is a small room with self-serve coffee and tea, packaged snacks, refrigerated salads, sandwiches and charcuterie boxes, canned water and sodas, and not much else: no Wi-Fi to speak of, few power outlets, no restrooms (View from the Wing). You walk in, take what you want, and leave. Our listing for Provisions at CLT scores it accordingly; it is not a place to sit, and it is not trying to be.

The JFK version is the same idea with more effort behind it: hot breakfast items until 11 a.m., meals and snacks the rest of the day, vegetarian options, the barista bar, and an American Airlines representative on site for rebooking. Access is the same as any Admirals Club, which means members, Citi / AAdvantage Executive cardholders, the four annual passes on the Citi AAdvantage Globe card, Citi Strata Elite, or a $79 day pass. Note that Terminal 8 already has a full Admirals Club on Concourse C plus the three lounges American shares with British Airways, so Provisions is being added for throughput on a busy concourse rather than filling a gap.

What the Austin club tells you

The Austin project is the opposite bet: a bigger, slower space with distinct zones for eating, working and resting, Champagne Bollinger and Lavazza partnerships, and the terrace as the headline. It is also catch-up. The current Austin Admirals Club is a gate-side room across from gate 22 with no showers, while Delta's Sky Club at Austin has had a covered outdoor Sky Deck for years and United's club sits across the concourse. American had announced an Austin lounge once before, in 2021, and then cut flying from the city; The Points Guy notes the new club will not take over the former Chase Sapphire Terrace space (The Points Guy).

How the two fit together

American has promised a new or refreshed lounge roughly every month, and we tracked what is actually on that calendar in an earlier piece. Read against that list, Austin and JFK Provisions are the two ends of the plan. Flagship-style showpieces go where American competes with Delta for local premium traffic and where terrace views sell tickets. Provisions goes where the problem is volume: connecting hubs and long-haul concourses where the main club is full by mid-afternoon and most people only want a coffee and something to eat before boarding.

That makes Provisions less a lounge and more a pressure valve. If it works at JFK, expect it at Dallas Fort Worth and Chicago before it shows up anywhere glamorous.

Our take

We like the honesty of Provisions more than its execution so far. Charlotte proved that a room with decent food and no seating is still useful when the alternative is a 20-minute queue at the main club. But calling it an Admirals Club invites a comparison it cannot win, and the day-pass price is the same $79 you would pay to sit down somewhere with a bar. The JFK version, with real coffee and a hot breakfast, is the first one that might feel like a fair trade.

Austin is easier to judge: an outdoor terrace in central Texas is a genuine draw for about eight months of the year, and doubling the footprint fixes the real complaint about the current club, which is that it fills up. Our only caution is the date. June 2027 is a construction schedule, not an opening announcement, and American's track record on its lounge timelines is uneven.
