Qatar Airways' first US lounge slips to 2027 with JFK's New Terminal One. Where Qatar flyers go until then

JFK's New Terminal One now says early 2027, which pushes back Qatar Airways' planned 15,000 sq ft lounge too. For now Qatar still flies from Terminal 8 and its premium passengers use the American and BA lounges there.

Qatar Airways' first dedicated lounge in the United States will not open this year. The airline said in August 2025 that it would move its New York operation into JFK's New Terminal One when the building opened in 2026, with a lounge of roughly 15,000 square feet attached to the move (One Mile at a Time). On September 15, 2026, the terminal's developer pushed the opening of its first phase to early 2027, citing the need to finish construction and test systems before taking passengers (The Points Guy). The lounge goes with the terminal, so it moves too.

The slip was not a surprise. In May, Moody's revised its outlook on the terminal's financing to negative after the original June 2026 target was abandoned and the operator started talking about November (Business Class Journal). Early 2027 is the third date.

What was promised

Qatar's announcement described the New York lounge as the airline's first in the US and its largest outside Doha, with direct gate access for Qatar Airways premium passengers. The Points Guy reported that other oneworld business and first class travellers departing from the new terminal would also be eligible (The Points Guy). That second point matters less than it sounds, because almost no other oneworld carrier is confirmed for the building. The anchor tenants for the first phase are Air France, KLM, Etihad, Korean Air and Turkish Airlines, and Air France has since announced its own two-storey lounge there for 2027 (Upgraded Points).

Where Qatar passengers go now

Qatar Airways currently flies from Terminal 8, the American Airlines and British Airways terminal, and its premium passengers use the shared lounges on the mezzanine above the main hall:

  • Business class passengers use the Greenwich Lounge, the large business lounge that opened in 2022, open 04:15 to 01:15.
  • oneworld Emerald members, which includes Qatar Privilege Club Platinum, use the smaller and quieter Soho Lounge.
  • The Chelsea Lounge is for first class passengers and the very top BA and AA tiers; Qatar does not sell first class to New York, so it is largely out of reach for Qatar flyers.

These are good lounges by New York standards. The complaint about Terminal 8 is not the lounges but the connection: Qatar passengers transferring to or from American's domestic network currently stay in one building, and after the move they will have to take the AirTrain between Terminal 8 and the new terminal, landside, with a second security screening.

Our take

Qatar's lounge is the kind of project that reads well in a press release and ages badly in a delay. The airline has been quietly well served at Terminal 8 since 2023, and the trade it signed up for, a lounge of its own in exchange for a harder American Airlines connection, only pays off if the terminal actually opens and the lounge is good. For now, anyone flying Qatar from New York should plan around the Greenwich Lounge, and anyone connecting from an American domestic flight should enjoy the single-terminal setup while it lasts. We would treat early 2027 as the earliest plausible date, not a promise.
