Cathay Pacific has never had a lounge of its own in New York. That is about to change. The airline has previewed a 930-square-metre (about 10,000 sq ft) lounge for JFK's new Terminal 6, and it is a bigger deal for oneworld flyers than one more lounge opening usually is.
According to Executive Traveller, the lounge holds close to 200 passengers. The interior follows the Ilse Crawford residential look Cathay has used since 2014, so expect warm materials and soft lighting rather than a showpiece. Familiar Cathay touches include the Noodle Bar, with what the airline calls "its own unique New York flavour." There are also shower suites, high-power USB-C outlets and wireless charging.
The detail that matters: boarding from the lounge
The unusual feature is the boarding route. Executive Traveller reports that premium passengers will be able to board directly onto the aerobridge and the waiting Cathay flight. You will not need to walk back out to a crowded gate area before an ultra-long flight to Hong Kong. It is a rare setup at US airports, and for a long-haul departure it is worth more than an extra bar.
There will be a general business class area and a separate zone for first class passengers and Cathay Diamond members.
Who gets in, and when
Per Executive Traveller, access covers business and first class passengers, Cathay Diamond members and oneworld Emerald equivalents. The report does not give a guest policy or opening hours.
Timing is less firm. The lounge was previously expected to open around mid-year, and Executive Traveller now describes it as "an early Christmas present for passengers." Cathay has not announced an opening date or the date its JFK flights move. The $4.2 billion Terminal 6 redevelopment itself is due to be unveiled later this month, according to the same report. Treat late 2026 as the expected window, not a promise.
Why it changes your pre-flight routine
Cathay currently flies from Terminal 8, home of the shared American Airlines and British Airways lounges. Executive Traveller reports that it is moving its three daily JFK–Hong Kong flights to Terminal 6. There, "for now, Cathay will be the only Oneworld airline," in a terminal that will be dominated by Star Alliance carriers.
That matters for anyone who has been timing a visit to a Terminal 8 lounge before a Cathay flight. Once the move happens, those lounges stop being an option, because JFK terminals are not connected airside. The new lounge will be the only oneworld lounge in the building. Emerald-level members of any oneworld airline are covered under the reported rules. The report does not mention oneworld Sapphire, so Sapphire-level members should check Cathay's own rules when the airline publishes them.
Our view: a dedicated lounge with gate access beats sharing a busy alliance hub, and Cathay has set a high bar with its lounges at Hong Kong. The open question is capacity. Room for about 200 people is enough for three widebody departures only if they are well spaced. Watch early reviews for crowding at the evening bank.
What to do now
If you fly Cathay out of JFK before the move, nothing changes: check in at Terminal 8 and use the oneworld lounges there. Once Cathay announces its Terminal 6 start date, check which terminal your ticket shows before you leave for the airport. A booking made months ago may show the old terminal. If you have a long connection on another oneworld airline at Terminal 8, Greenwich (business), Soho (Emerald) and Chelsea (first) remain your options.
