American opens Flagship Dining to business class at DFW and Miami; JFK's Chelsea Lounge stays first-only

Since September 15, Flagship Business passengers on long-haul, transcon and Hawaii routes can eat in the sit-down dining rooms at DFW and MIA. Seating is space-available, LAX returns late 2026, and JFK is not getting it.

American Airlines opened its Flagship Dining rooms at Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami to business class passengers on September 15, 2026. The sit-down, table-service rooms inside the Flagship Lounges had been limited to Flagship First passengers (and the top of the Concierge Key and oneworld partner first class pyramid) since they launched. According to American's announcement, customers in Flagship Business Plus and Flagship Business on qualifying long-haul international, transcontinental and Hawaii routes can now use them, on a space-available basis.

Three weeks in, the rules have settled and are worth spelling out, because "business class gets Flagship Dining" is broader than what American actually did.

The conditions

The ticket has to be a Flagship Business fare on a Flagship route. Domestic first on a 737 does not count, and neither does a short-haul international flight that is not marketed as Flagship. The access is tied to the cabin you are flying, not to status: Executive Platinum and Concierge Key members on an economy ticket do not get a table. Partner premium cabins are also out, per One Mile at a Time, so a British Airways Club World passenger at DFW uses the Flagship Lounge buffet, not the dining room.

Entry is space-available. You check in with the host at the dining room and, if it is full, join an electronic waitlist that pings you when a table opens. There is no priority for first class passengers or Concierge Key members over business passengers on the list, which is a little surprising and may change if the rooms get crowded.

American used the launch to add a wine and chocolate pairing, a KHK Hillside cabernet matched with Thomas Keller's K+M chocolate. Pleasant, but it is not why anyone should plan around this.

Where it works and where it does not

Dallas/Fort Worth has the larger room, 54 seats near gate D23, open noon to 10 pm with last seating at 9:30 pm. Miami has 35 seats near gate D30, noon to 10:30 pm with last seating at 9:45 pm. The hours matter: a morning transcon out of either hub gets nothing from this change.

Los Angeles had a Flagship Dining room before the pandemic and never reopened it. American says it returns in late 2026 and will follow the new rules.

New York JFK is the exception. American told One Mile at a Time it has no plans to introduce Flagship Dining there, because the Terminal 8 setup with British Airways already splits premium passengers across three lounges. The Chelsea Lounge, with its champagne bar and à la carte menu, remains for Flagship First, BA First and the Concierge Key tier. Flagship Business passengers at JFK go to the Greenwich Lounge or the Soho Lounge, both of which are buffet rooms, and both of which are perfectly good buffet rooms. They are not the same thing as being seated and served.

Our take

This is a real improvement and American deserves credit for it. United's Polaris Lounges have served business class passengers at a table since 2016, Delta One Lounges since 2024, and American's answer until now was to keep its best dining rooms for a first class cabin it is retiring. Opening the doors was overdue.

The catch is capacity. Flagship Dining rooms were sized for a first class cabin of a handful of seats per flight, and they are now serving every lie-flat seat on every long-haul departure from the hub. At Miami, with 35 chairs, a wait at 7 pm seems inevitable. American has not announced any expansion of the rooms themselves.

So treat this as a bonus, not a plan. If you are connecting at DFW or MIA in the afternoon or early evening with a couple of hours to spare, put your name on the list when you arrive at the lounge and eat whatever the buffet has while you wait. If you get a table, good. If you do not, the Flagship Lounge is still one of the better airline lounges in the country, and you have lost nothing.
