Sky Club access explained: why your Amex Platinum won't get you in without a Delta boarding pass

The Platinum Card still opens Delta Sky Clubs, but only with a same-day Delta-operated ticket, never on Main Basic, within three hours of departure, and for 10 visits a year unless you spend $75,000. Here is every rule that turns cardholders away, as of October 2026.

The most common conversation at a Delta Sky Club front desk goes like this. Someone hands over a Platinum Card, the agent asks for a boarding pass, and the boarding pass says United, or Air France, or Delta Main Basic. The card is fine. The ticket is the problem. Since February 2025 there has also been a third way to be turned away, and nobody notices it until it happens: the visits ran out.

The Amex Platinum and Business Platinum still get you into Delta's clubs, but the benefit is now tightly fenced. Here is how the fence works as of October 2026, based on Delta's published Sky Club access terms.

The ticket matters more than the card

Delta's terms limit Platinum Card access to a same-day Delta-operated flight, or a Delta-marketed flight operated by WestJet with a ticket number starting 006. That wording does real work.

Delta-operated includes Delta Connection regional flights, so the small jet to Knoxville counts. What does not count is a flight on a partner's aircraft, even when it carries a DL flight number. If your JFK to Paris ticket shows a Delta code but the plane is Air France, the Platinum Card benefit does not cover it. Delta has separate rules for SkyTeam Elite Plus members and international premium-cabin passengers on partners; your Amex is not one of them.

The ticket also has to be for today. A boarding pass for tomorrow's flight, or a confirmation number with no boarding pass yet, is the classic way to get politely turned around. Load the pass before you walk over.

Basic economy is out

Delta's terms say plainly that Platinum Card Members flying on Delta Main Basic fares do not get this benefit. This is not new, but it catches people because the fare name on the boarding pass is easy to miss. If you bought the cheapest fare, assume no lounge.

The same logic is now spreading up the plane. Delta began selling basic versions of its premium cabins in July 2026. Delta's Delta One Lounge page says Basic Business passengers lose access to that lounge for travel on or after January 19, 2027, and lounge access on those fares until then is described in coverage as a transition courtesy. Some reporting says a Delta Amex or Sky Club membership will still get Basic Business travellers into a Sky Club after that date, but Delta's own access page does not spell that out yet, so I would treat it as unconfirmed.

Ten visits, and what a "visit" is

Since February 1, 2025, the US Platinum and Business Platinum come with 10 visits per year, with the year running February 1 to January 31. The Delta Reserve gets 15. Holding both gives you both allowances. Past the cap, Delta charges $50 per visit.

A visit is generous in one respect. Delta defines it as up to 24 hours from your first club entry or Grab and Go use, across any number of clubs and airports. A morning at LaGuardia and a connection in Atlanta on the same trip is one visit. A Friday outbound and a Sunday return are two.

Grab and Go uses a visit too. Picking up a sandwich at the counter costs exactly what sitting down for two hours costs. If you are counting, sit down.

Amex added a visit tracker to its app and website in early 2026, according to Thrifty Traveler; Reserve holders can also see it in the Delta app. Check it before a long trip, not at the door.

The $75,000 unlock

Spend $75,000 in eligible purchases on the card in a calendar year and the cap goes away. Delta's terms say unlimited access then runs for the rest of that calendar year, all of the next one, and through January 31 of the year after. Their own example: earn it on May 1, 2025 and it lasts until January 31, 2027. Purchases by additional cardmembers on the account count toward the total.

For most people that number is not a target; it is the reason the cap exists. But if a business's spending was going somewhere anyway, note the clock: hit it early in a year and you get close to two years of unlimited entry.

Guests

Platinum Card Members can bring up to two guests, or their immediate family (spouse or domestic partner and children under 21), at $50 per person per visit. The Platinum includes no free guest passes. The Reserve includes four one-time guest passes a year. Our guest policy guide compares this with other clubs.

The 3-hour window and arrivals

You cannot walk in more than three hours before your flight's scheduled departure. The exception is a layover: Delta says the rule does not affect passengers connecting, so a long connection in Detroit is fine. Delta 360 members, Centurion cardholders and lifetime Sky Club members are exempt from the window entirely. Our 3-hour rule explainer covers how other networks handle it.

Arrival access still exists. Delta tried to end it in 2022 and reversed course within days. One Mile at a Time reports that Platinum cardholders can use a club on arrival with a same-day Delta ticket, and that it counts as a visit. Delta's Platinum terms, which talk about departures and layovers, are less explicit, so do not plan a post-redeye shower around it without asking the desk.

The Delta One Lounge is a different door

The Platinum Card does not get you into a Delta One Lounge, and neither does a Sky Club membership, a Reserve card, or a day pass. Delta's page says co-branded cards, memberships and paid entry do not apply. Those rooms, at JFK, LAX, Boston and Seattle, are for same-day Delta One passengers, Delta 360 members flying in first (not First Basic), and passengers in certain partner premium cabins. Salt Lake City is in the works and Atlanta has been reported for 2028. At JFK the Delta One Lounge sits between Concourses A and B, not far from the B31 Sky Club; in Boston it is entered through the Terminal E Sky Club, which is exactly where people with the wrong ticket get stopped.

If you buy the membership instead

Annual Sky Club membership is sold only to Medallion members. Delta's Individual tier is $695 or 69,500 miles, and Executive is $1,495 or 149,500 miles with guest privileges, per current reporting. Membership gets you around the visit cap but not around the basic-economy ban or the 3-hour window.

Why you got turned away: the short list

  • Your flight is operated by Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic or another partner, even if it shows a Delta flight number.
  • You are on Delta Main Basic.
  • It is more than three hours before departure and you are not connecting.
  • You have used your 10 visits for the February to January year and declined the $50 charge.
  • Your boarding pass is for another day.
  • You are at a Delta One Lounge, not a Sky Club.
  • Your Platinum Card was issued outside the US. Delta's 10-visit terms are written for the US Platinum and Business Platinum, so check your own issuer's terms.

The clubs below

These are hub clubs where the rules above bite hardest, with the site's hours and ratings. Atlanta's A17 was renovated in 2026. LaGuardia's old Gate 81 club closed in December 2025, so the main Terminal C club is the one to aim for. For a straight ranking, see the 12 best Delta Sky Clubs. Ratings follow our methodology.
