Iberia has opened a new lounge in Madrid that is mainly about who it keeps out. The Emerald Lounge Sorolla is for the airline's top-tier customers and Oneworld Emerald members only. Business class on its own is not enough. For British Airways Gold Card holders and other Emerald flyers heading to European cities, it is now the best room at Barajas.
What opened
The lounge had its grand opening on September 10 in Terminal 4. Business Traveller reports 800 square meters and space for 128 guests. Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola did the interiors, and the room is named after the painter Joaquín Sorolla.
Inside are two soundproofed, suite-style rest cabins, showers, a 360-degree circular bar with its own bartender, and barista coffee. The food leans Spanish: pastries, tomato toast, tapas, Iberian produce and crema catalana.
Reports differ on how the food is served. Business Traveller says it is buffet only, with no à la carte menu. One Mile at a Time describes a menu you can order from as well as a buffet. We will settle that on our first visit.
Iberia also says the lounge is consistent with its new business class product, which launches in 2027. In other words, the airline wants this room to set the tone for what comes next.
Who gets in
Iberia's chief customer officer, Beatriz Guillén, explained the name to Business Traveller: "We've called it Emerald, because we not only welcome our top-tier Iberia guests, but oneworld Emerald status guests are welcome."
Moodie Davitt adds the condition that matters: eligible guests must be flying short- or medium-haul from the H, J, K and M gate areas. One Mile at a Time places the lounge in T4's Schengen area, right after security next to the Dalí lounge, open daily from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.
The London Air Travel lounge tracker lists it for BA Club Gold and Oneworld Emerald card holders. It also notes that Madrid–London flights leave from the T4S satellite. So a Gold Card holder flying home to Heathrow is not the lounge's core customer. Because the lounge sits right after security, you could in theory stop in first, but the onward trip to T4S means passport control and a train ride. Ask at the desk, leave plenty of time, or use the Velázquez lounge in the satellite instead.
Guest rules have not been published yet.
Where everyone else goes
Sapphire members and business class passengers in T4 still use the Dalí lounge next door. It is a large, well-rated room with showers. In T4S, the Velázquez lounge remains Iberia's long-haul flagship. Priority Pass members flying from T4S can use Sala VIP Neptuno.
Our take
A separate Emerald room is common at oneworld hubs, and Madrid was overdue for one. The open questions are crowding and food. With only 128 seats in a busy Schengen hub, the room could fill quickly at peak times. We also want to know whether the link to the new business class means real table service or only better finishes. For now, it is a clear upgrade for Emerald flyers on European routes.
