Qatar Airways is adding a second Sydney-area airport to its map. The airline says it will fly between Doha and Western Sydney International (WSI) from December 15, 2027. That makes WSI Qatar's seventh gateway in Australia, after Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra.
The launch is more than a year away. Tickets go on sale much sooner, on December 19, 2026, according to Qatar Airways' announcement, published October 20.
The schedule
Qatar plans three flights a week at first. The airline says it intends to grow the route to daily service, but it has not given a date for that.
| Flight | Route | Days | Times (local) |
|---|---|---|---|
| QR906 | Doha to Western Sydney | Mon, Wed, Fri | 01:40 to 23:45 |
| QR907 | Western Sydney to Doha | Tue, Thu, Sat | 16:10 to 23:00 |
The outbound flight leaves Doha in the small hours and lands in Western Sydney late the same night, local time. The return leaves WSI in the late afternoon and reaches Doha before midnight, which leaves time for an overnight connection onward to Europe, Africa or the Americas.
The aircraft and cabins
Qatar will fly the route with a Boeing 777-300ER. The airline lists 42 business class seats and 312 economy seats, 354 in all. That count matches one of the 777-300ER layouts on Qatar's published seat maps, but aircraft swaps happen, so check the seat map for your flight before you book.
There is no first class on this jet. Qatar says passengers will have free Starlink Wi-Fi on board. The airline has been fitting Starlink across its widebody fleet this year; we covered that rollout in our Starlink story.
Qatar has not said whether its next-generation Qsuite, due to start flying in 2027, will reach this route. We looked at that seat's timing in our story on the new Qsuite.
Why Western Sydney matters
WSI, in Sydney's west, opens to passengers on October 25, 2026. It has no overnight curfew, unlike Kingsford Smith. That gives airlines more freedom on timing, and Qatar's late-night arrival takes advantage of it.
For travelers who live in Western Sydney or the Blue Mountains, the new route could mean a much shorter drive to the airport. For everyone else, it adds a second Qatar option into Sydney and more seats on a busy corridor. Qatar already flies to Sydney Airport, and the WSI route does not replace those flights.
Where to wait
At Hamad International in Doha, business class passengers and eligible oneworld elites can use Qatar's Al Mourjan lounges. The Al Mourjan Business Lounge (The Garden) and the Al Mourjan Business Lounge (South) both have showers and a full bar. See our Doha airport page for the rest of the terminal's lounges.
Western Sydney is the open question. The airport's first lounge, The Rayleigh, is run by dnata and opens in November 2026 for eligible Singapore Airlines customers. Reports say passengers on other international airlines may get access as their flights start, but Qatar has not said where its premium passengers or oneworld elites will wait at WSI. With the first flight more than a year away, there is time for that to change, and the airport says it has space set aside for more lounges.
What to do now
If you live closer to Western Sydney than to Mascot, put December 19 in your calendar. That is when seats go on sale.
If lounge access matters to you, wait for Qatar or WSI to confirm the lounge arrangement before you choose WSI over Kingsford Smith. Until then, the Qatar Airways airline page has the airline's fleet and loyalty details, and we will update this story when the lounge plan is clear.
