United is changing how its frequent flyers earn elite status. From January 1, 2027, MileagePlus Premier status will come only from Premier qualifying points, or PQP. The number of flights you take will no longer help you qualify. United posted the details on October 13 in its MileagePlus update.
For lounge travelers, the change that matters most is at Premier Gold. That is the tier that comes with Star Alliance Gold, and Star Alliance Gold is what gets you into United Clubs and partner lounges on international trips.
What changes on January 1
Here are the 2027 targets United lists, next to the rules in place this year. Points Frog has a full breakdown of the new Premier rules.
| Tier | 2026 rules | 2027 rules |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | 15 flights + 5,000 PQP, or 6,000 PQP | 6,000 PQP |
| Gold | 30 flights + 10,000 PQP, or 12,000 PQP | 12,000 PQP |
| Platinum | 45 flights + 15,000 PQP, or 18,000 PQP | 18,000 PQP |
| 1K | 60 flights + 22,000 PQP, or 28,000 PQP | 32,000 PQP |
A few rules stay the same:
- You still need at least four flights on United or United Express in the year.
- PQP still comes from United flights, Star Alliance partner flights and spending on an eligible United card. On United and United Express flights, you earn one PQP per dollar of base fare and carrier surcharges, according to United's qualification page.
- Status you earn in 2026 will not expire until January 31, 2028, United says. The new rules apply to what you earn in 2027.
If you used PlusPoints to buy 2027 flight credits, United says it will refund them.
Why Gold is the lounge tier
United's Premier benefits page says Gold, Platinum and 1K members get Star Alliance Gold. Under United's lounge access rules, a United member with Star Gold and a same-day boarding pass for an international flight on a Star Alliance airline can use United Clubs at the departure and connecting airports of that trip. One guest on the same flight can come too.
Gold matters for cardholders as well. The United Club Card includes a United Club membership. It only becomes an All Access membership, with Star Alliance partner lounges and a second guest, once you reach Premier Gold or spend $50,000 on the card in a calendar year, according to United's membership page.
Here is what that means in practice. In 2026, a traveler who took 30 flights and earned 10,000 PQP reached Gold. In 2027, that same year of travel falls 2,000 PQP short. On United fares, that is about $2,000 more in base fare, unless card spending fills the gap.
The 1K jump
The top published tier moves the most. The points-only target rises from 28,000 to 32,000 PQP, a 14% increase. For road warriors who used the 60-flight route, the change is much sharper. They needed 22,000 PQP in 2026. In 2027, they will need 32,000, which is 10,000 more.
Cardholders get a head start. Others lose it
United is also tying its yearly head start to its cards. In early 2026, United gave a starter deposit of PQP to Premier members, card or no card. For 2027, United says you get it only if you hold an eligible United card by December 31, 2026, and have Premier status on February 1, 2027. Authorized users do not get it.
The deposit is 5% of your tier's target: 300 PQP for Silver, 600 for Gold, 900 for Platinum and 1,600 for 1K. The 1K figure is up from 1,400 this year.
United also lists how much PQP each card can earn in 2027:
- United Explorer Card: up to 1,000 PQP
- United Quest Card: up to 18,000 PQP
- United Club Card: up to 32,000 PQP
The United Club Card cap now matches the full 1K target. You would still need your four United flights.
Upgrades go dynamic too
For travel on or after February 1, 2027, United says the PlusPoints needed for an upgrade "may vary based on demand and available seats." The fixed price for each upgrade goes away.
Our take
United told members the change is meant to make status simpler, CNBC reported. It is simpler. One number now decides your tier. But simpler is not better for everyone. The flyer who loses most is the one who takes lots of short, cheap trips. That person used to reach Gold, and the lounge access that comes with it, partly by showing up often. In 2027, only spending counts.
The winners are people who buy pricier tickets or put big spending on a United card. That fits a wider shift in U.S. loyalty programs. Delta already bases Medallion status on dollars, not trips.
If United Club access is your main reason to chase status, check your numbers now. Compare your 2026 PQP with 12,000. If you are short, weigh a card, pricier fares or a paid membership. United lists All Access at $1,400 a year for most members, or $750 for an Individual membership with no guests and no partner lounges.
