If you see "Miami to Barcelona" on your American Airlines app next year, check the airport code. On October 16, American said it will start flights from Miami to Barcelona, Venezuela, airport code BLA, on January 15, 2027. That is the Barcelona in eastern Venezuela, not the one in Spain, according to American's release.
It will be American's third city in Venezuela, after Caracas and Maracaibo. American says tickets go on sale October 19 on aa.com and in its app.
The schedule
American will fly three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The flights use an Embraer 175, which American says has a premium cabin, Wi-Fi and in-seat power. Here are the times American lists:
| Flight | Departs | Arrives |
|---|---|---|
| Miami to Barcelona (BLA) | 10:15 a.m. ET | 2:52 p.m. ET |
| Barcelona (BLA) to Miami | 3:32 p.m. ET | 6:19 p.m. ET |
American lists both sets of times in Eastern Time. Venezuela keeps its own clock, so check the local times shown in your booking before you plan a pickup.
Why Barcelona, Venezuela?
American says Barcelona and nearby Puerto La Cruz are major business and industrial centers in eastern Venezuela. The airline says the new flight will help build business ties and give travelers one-stop trips to more than 100 destinations in North America through Miami.
The route is also part of a fast comeback. American says it became the first U.S. airline since 2019 to resume service to Venezuela earlier this year. After the earthquakes in Venezuela, American says it flew a relief flight to Caracas with more than 9,000 pounds of supplies. It also says it was the first U.S. airline to resume daily service once Caracas reopened to international flights.
Once Barcelona starts, American will run 24 weekly flights between the U.S. and Venezuela. That includes twice-daily Caracas flights and daily Maracaibo flights from Miami. American calls itself the only U.S. airline serving Venezuela today.
What about lounges?
Miami is where the lounge time happens on this trip. Lounge Frog lists American's Flagship Lounge and two Admirals Clubs at MIA, at D15 and D30. The full list is on our Miami airport page.
A first-class seat on a short regional flight may not open the same doors as a long-haul business ticket. Entry to the Flagship Lounge and Admirals Club depends on your ticket, status or membership, so check the Admirals Club rules before you plan a long visit.
Lounge Frog does not list any lounge at Barcelona's airport yet. If you want a meal before the flight home, plan for it before you reach the gate.
Our take
This is a small route with a big story behind it. Three flights a week on a regional jet is not a huge bet. But it shows how fast American is moving back into a market that U.S. airlines left for years.
For travelers with family or business in eastern Venezuela, a nonstop from Miami means one less connection. For everyone else, the main lesson is simple: when you search for Barcelona, read the airport code. BLA is in Venezuela. BCN is in Spain. Mixing them up would be a very expensive mistake.
