Royal Air Maroc is the latest airline to sign up for Starlink. The Moroccan carrier will install Starlink Wi-Fi on 41 aircraft, starting in early 2027, according to Morocco World News. Access will be free for members of Safar Flyer, the airline's loyalty program.
What the airline announced
The airline shared the news on October 7. In a post on X, Royal Air Maroc said the deal makes it "the first African airline to offer Starlink connectivity onboard." Here are the key points reported by Morocco World News:
- 41 aircraft will get Starlink.
- Installation starts in early 2027.
- The rollout will be gradual, so flights keep running as planes are fitted.
- Wi-Fi will be free for Safar Flyer members.
- Passengers will be able to stream, message and work online.
The airline said: "Royal Air Maroc has selected Starlink to bring next-generation inflight Wi-Fi to our passengers." Starlink said passengers and crew "will have access to Starlink" soon.
The airline has not said which aircraft are first, or when all 41 will be done.
Which planes could get it
Royal Air Maroc flies about 70 aircraft, Morocco World News reports. Its fleet includes Boeing 787 Dreamliners, Boeing 737s, Embraer E190s and ATR turboprops. You can see the mix on our Royal Air Maroc page.
The airline has not named the 41 jets. One Mile at a Time guesses that the Dreamliners and 737 MAX 8s make up most of them, since those are its newest planes. That is a fair guess, but treat it as a guess until the airline confirms.
Why "free for members" matters
Several airlines now use the same model. You join the free loyalty program, log in on board, and the Wi-Fi costs nothing. It is a simple way for an airline to grow its member list. It also means you should sign up for Safar Flyer before you fly, not on the plane.
It is not yet clear if your member number must be on the booking, or if you can log in on board. Check the airline's Wi-Fi page closer to your trip.
How it fits the wider trend
Starlink has been spreading fast across the industry. Qatar Airways, the Lufthansa Group and Air France all use it or are rolling it out. In Africa, though, fast and free inflight Wi-Fi has been rare. If Royal Air Maroc delivers, it could put pressure on other carriers in the region to follow.
Royal Air Maroc is a oneworld member. That means oneworld elites flying its long-haul Dreamliners can already use partner lounges on the ground. Better Wi-Fi in the air would make the whole trip more useful for business travelers heading to Casablanca.
What to do now
There is nothing to book yet. If you fly Royal Air Maroc often, join Safar Flyer now, so your account is ready when the first jets are fitted. And keep expectations in check for 2027. A gradual rollout means many flights will still lack Wi-Fi for a while.
My take
Free Starlink for members is the right model, and it is a big step up for travel to and from North Africa. I would still check the aircraft type before counting on it. Until most of the fleet is done, Wi-Fi will be a nice surprise, not a promise.
